I park my truck in front of Sydney’s apartment the next morning to drop Opal off. Sunshine sent us a good morning text saying she was on her way home, so even though I don’t know exactly when she’ll be back, I want to be ready for whenever she calls.

I finally went and got myself a new truck this week, so I no longer have to rely on others to pick up or drop off Opal.

I got myself a patriot blue Dodge Ram 2500 Crew Cab. If I was a weaker man, I would’ve punched Whiskey and Ring when I pulled in the compound after coming home from the dealership. They both were giving me shit, saying their Chevys were better than my Dodge. I laughed back and said when they needed to be pulled out of a ditch, I wouldn’t help them.

“Daddy, do I have to stay here?” Opal whispers as I lift her from her booster seat.

I keep her in my arms and kiss her cheek. “You spend the weekend with your mom, then I’ll ask her if you can come back next week. That sound like a deal?”

“Okay.” She doesn’t sound especially happy, but this is one of the downsides of co-parenting.

When Sydney first told me that she was pregnant, I laughed in her face. I knew I was always careful with wrapping my dick with all the club girls, but apparently, letting her supply the condom one drunken night wasn’t a good idea. After I got it out of her that she’d poked holes in the whole box, I lost my damn mind.

I didn’t trust that the baby was even mine until we had a DNA test. On the off-chance the baby was my blood, I was in the delivery room for her birth, but just stood in the corner to watch. The nurses took our blood right after Opal came into the world, and three hours later, the results proved she was mine. Then, and only then, did I agree to sign the birth certificate and give her my name.

When they left the hospital two days later, I drove Sydney to her new apartment. Unbeknownst to her, she’d been kicked out of the club and was never to be allowed back on the premises. She screamed at me for hours after that, but I didn’t care. She lied and connived to get knocked up by a Brother—she couldn’t be trusted ever again.

Until I saw Sunshine again, I never really put much thought into trusting another woman enough to want to claim an Old Lady. Now, it’s all I can think about.

Knock knock! I bang on the door, but there’s no answer. I try the handle and find the door unlocked. When I swing it open, the whole apartment is pitch black. I flip the lights on and walk in with Opal still in my arms.

“Where’s Mom?” Opal asks.

“No idea, munchkin. Let’s get you a movie started, and I’ll go look for her.”

What I don’t tell her is that I’ve got a bad feeling.
