EIGHT

The following morning, Maggie rose early after a fitful sleep. Despite the fact that she was not required to report to work while her hand healed, she was determined to spend her time off learning everything she could about the potential case against Suzan. But the last thing she wanted to do was encourage Orson to do the same. She sent a quick message to Ruby not to expect her in for breakfast and coffee. Instead, she drove across town to the Jefferson Street store where Brett handed off her favorite latte and a cinnamon roll when she went through the drive-through.

“Where are you off to this morning?” he asked her quietly from the window.

“I think I’m going to look for a new yoga class.”

“Are you going to be mad at me if I give you the husband speech again?”

“Let me do it for you,” Maggie said with a grin. “I will be careful. I will not put myself in any danger. I will not harass anyone and get arrested. Does that about cover it?”

“That’s about it,” Brett said. “I will only add that I expect you to call me if you run into any problems.”

“Duly noted, sir,” Maggie said.

“Did you really just call me sir?” Brett asked.

“Only in this context,” Maggie said, mocking a mad face. “Don’t you dare get used to it.” She left the donut shop and headed out of town toward Hunter Springs. She drove for a bit and then pulled off the highway just before she reached the county road to head north to the Outpost Clinic. She pulled up the search engine on her cell phone and began looking for nearby yoga studios.

Immediately, the results returned with several yoga studios in Dogwood Mountain, Hunter Springs, and even a few places in Joplin despite the distance. She scrolled through the results until she spotted one less than three miles from the Outpost Clinic.

“Bingo,” Maggie said to herself. She tapped the screen again, hoping to bring up the website of the yoga studio. When she did, she found the website under construction. She searched a little more, hoping to uncover the name of the studio’s owner. All she came up with instead was an address.

Maggie pulled back out onto the road and followed the directions to the studio, passing the Outpost Clinic on her way. About a mile and a half north of the clinic, she turned off on a gravel road, gazing at the large homes along the way.

She was surprised at the number of luxury homes that had been constructed so close to the Outpost Clinic. Of course, the neighborhood itself was a bit of an anomaly. The rest of the area was filled with rural farmhouses and trailers. She followed the addresses on the mailboxes for another mile or so and slowed down as she approached her destination. Trees surrounded the long gravel driveway, obscuring her view of the house.

When Maggie turned in, she spotted a small sign with an arrow pointing down the driveway that read, “Yoga Studio This Way.
