Chapter Eleven

Ron closed the door to Bart’s room and drew in a deep breath. Nothing could have prepared him for that. Bart’s mother and his girlfriend Lucy were looking at him for answers as to how this had happened and he didn’t have any to give them. Hospital staff was monitoring Bart’s condition very closely. He had some burns, a broken arm and a possible cerebral contusion. The burns and bones would heal, but if the tests showed any bleeding on the brain, his prognosis sounded a lot harder to come back from. Bart’s loved ones were obviously worried about him, and wanted to know exactly what happened.

Ron’s chest was tight with guilt. He should have done something more to protect his team from the beginning. Fought harder. Grabbed his gun sooner. Seen this coming. He winced as he brought his hand up and ran it through his hair. Every part of him ached. But at least he wasn’t in ICU.

He nodded to the nurse as he left the intensive care unit. They’d been kind enough to give him more than a few minutes with Bart and he was grateful. He’d needed to see Bart, talk to him, and make sure he knew Ron cared. But time was moving quickly, a new day already dawning and he had two more stops to make before Williams had him and Sarah on a plane to New York.

He looked at his watch. Sarah should be back any minute with their packed bags. They were on a strict timetable and he couldn’t go home to pack and visit his team. They were on a strict timetable, so he appreciated her volunteering to swing by his house on her way to pack herself. It had felt a little strange giving her the key to his house and instructing her on what to pack for him. But at the same time, it seemed normal. He couldn’t analyze his feelings right now.

Sarah. He still had a lot of reservations about involving her any further, but she was right. They made a good team. In that basement, when it looked like they might die, all his feelings eagerly bubbled to the surface. When he’d reached for her hand, she hadn’t turned away and that small victory had his mind thinking of where the future could lead.

Carefully running his hand over his jaw, he knew he needed to be realistic and not get his hopes up. A few confessions and handholding didn’t necessarily add up to a second chance. They needed to take this slow and get all their past issues out in the open. But that had to take the backseat. This mission would take all his focus and he couldn’t afford to be thinking of anything else.

He stopped outside the door to Claire’s room, greeting the police guard stationed there. “How’s it going, McCormick?”

“Fine, sir. She has three visitors.” McCormick stood aside and reached for the door handle.

“All cleared?”

“Yes, sir. Her father, her fiancé, and Detective Black.”

Ron sighed inwardly.
