That night I arrived early at my parents’ house. Dad and I were supposed to talk again, but Jacob’s car sat in the driveway, and, alarm already ringing in my head, I almost didn’t go in. Lincoln had been busy all day, so we hadn’t discussed anything further, and now here I was walking in on the dragon himself.

Scowling, I strolled slowly through the yard. When I walked in the door into the grand hall, as my mother referred to it, I didn’t smell food. No one came out to greet me. I wandered up the central staircase, figuring my father’s study on the second floor was the hot spot. Halfway up the stairs, I stopped when I heard my mother’s raised voice.

“I can’t believe you would do this to your own son.”

“He needs someone to take him in hand. Jacob is willing to absolve this mess, now. It’s best to move quickly before the word is out that Ambrose can’t conceive.” Father’s voice rang out cool and clear, and I knew that tone. It was one you couldn’t reason with, argue with, or whine your way out of.

“This mess is our son’s life. And you’re just going to sell him off to the next bidder?”

A deep, long-suffering sigh. “Gloria, you’ve never had a sense for these things. Please, just let me handle it.”

“These things? He’s my baby.”

“See, even now you say that. You’re too emotionally involved.” Anger clung to Father’s words.

Shakily moving forward, I reached the top of the stairs and turned down the wide hall, stepping hesitantly onto the plush carpeting. My shoes sank into it. Father stood there, arms crossed. Mother huddled across the hall from him with her back turned.

“The Hodges are into tech. They’ll be good for us.”

Mother looked utterly defeated, and the scent that swamped me burned and stung, and made me furious. Father didn’t realize that when he acted this way, he oozed alpha, but he did, and it was a nonverbal battering ram. He probably didn’t do it on purpose, but I could clearly imagine how my mother’s stomach must be turning.

“I’m not signing anything.”

They both turned toward me. “What are you going on about, Ambrose?” Father glared.

“Why is Jacob here?”

“He’s taking possession of the house this week.”

“What?”

“He said he would communicate that to you. Are you telling me you’ve made no arrangements?”

I rubbed my cheeks, my five-o’clock shadow grating on my palms before I answered. “With what money? You wouldn’t release my trust to me, and damn it, that’s my home!”

Father threw his hands up in the air. “It’s a house, Ambrose. You can move home for a few months.”

“And then what?”

Mom shook her head at me, but I needed to hear it.

“I’ve found a new alpha for you. He already has children from a previous marriage, so that won’t be an issue.”

Stunned, I wasn’t able to breathe for a few seconds. Riley. All I wanted right now was Riley. “What happened to his omega?”

“Died after an illness? I’m not sure.”

“No.”

Father took a step toward me, that alpha scent clattering its way my direction in a larger swell.
