SIXTEEN - AMY

You’d think it was a prisoner transfer the way it all unrolled.

The bus—one of those executive types with blackened windows, leather seats, and a minibar—pulled into an underground drive off the empty downtown street at 3 AM. I thought at first that we were going into some sort of shipping and receiving entrance. Instead, as Caleb and I lead the procession off the ramp and into the building, I discovered it was anything but. Through a set of glass doors rimmed with polished brass, a lobby spread out before us. It looked like a mythical creature who threw up cut marble and Christmas trees had gone on a bender and everything around had suffered the consequences. It was so Miracle-on-34th-Street that I wondered for a moment if we’d come to the wrong place.

“Where are we?”

“WWL, of course.”

Caleb’s hand landed on the small of my back, and it was only then that I realized I’d stopped walking, dazed and stupefied.

I shook my head as my feet gave into his will. “I’ve been to WWL before when Geri wanted to drop off some takeout to Tobias during lunch. It didn’t look like this.”

“That’s because you came in the huey entrance. This is the executive entrance. The real executives, not the ones you see listed on the webpage.”

The security staff wore suits almost as nice as Caleb’s (but they didn’t look as good, no fault of their own, I guess. Not everyone could hit the genetics lottery). Each nodded at him as we passed, then Teiko and Mina behind us, the rest of the slayers bringing up the rear, as we headed for a pair of gilded-door elevators.

“And what are we doing here?”

“It’s our new home, Barbie. And stop looking so ... blonde. You look like a beached fish. Pick up the chin, drop the doe eyes.”

I spun on him as both elevators opened behind me. “One, on behalf of blondes everywhere, I resent the stereotype that you’re implying. And two, what do you mean it’s our new home? You mean, we’re going to live here? But isn’t this place crawling with vampires?”

Caleb pointed the left elevator, which in a side-by-side, I noticed was much larger than the one on the right. “Everyone on. Reception is waiting for you on the thirtieth floor. They’ll show everyone to their new apartments. There’s ten total, but each one has two bedrooms, so you’ll have to figure out who goes where. You’re all adults, I trust you to make good decisions.”

They shuffled with grins on their faces as Caleb gently pulled Teiko aside. “Not you, babe. If you’re willing, I’d like to have you come stay with me up on the thirty-third floor. Mina’s taken to you and we both know Amy can’t be with her twenty-four seven.”

A century of female lib riled up in me. If he thought Teiko was going to be okay with the come-play-nanny line, when she was a supernatural being with phenomenal magical powers, then he was...

“Sure, Caleb,” the pixie slayer giggled.
