In an environment infused with discourses focused on radical Islam and violence, it has become a daunting challenge for community members, anti-racists, and academics to highlight the presence of the extreme right in Canada. In 2006, on the basis of an extensive series of oral and written submissions on hate crime, the Ontario Hate Crime Community Working Group (2006: 32) came to the profound conclusion that:hate is so commonplace and institutionalized that is it almost impossible for those outside the vulnerable communities to fully appreciate its magnitude or to recognize it as a scourge on our society as a whole […] when the public lacks cultural awareness and understanding of difference, this contributes to exclusion, victimization, fear and tolerance of hate crime.
