Riga, Vienna and Brussels, in what way are these three magnificent cities alike? They are the pearls of art nouveau architectural style in Europe. Half of the center of Riga is built in this style. The showcase of the best of art nouveau in Riga is here, on Alberta Street.

Alberta Street represents the flawless architecture of art nouveau. There is a different expression for this style, which was adopted by the Englishman, William Morris, in nearly every language: in English it’s art nouveau because the Brits were almost sure that something so beautiful could only come from France. The French, for their part, used the English phrase “modern style” or simply moderne, but also style anglais or the English style, for they thought that such a progressive style could only have been invented by the Brits.

The Russians and Spaniards agreed with the French, calling this style modern. In contrast, in Italy it was called Style Liberty, after a British design company, but in Austria the accepted name is Sezessionstil or simply Sezession, meaning separation from the old ways. A similar term is used in the Czech Republic and Poland.
