“Are you sure this is okay?” Kelly couldn’t believe they were getting a tour of the air control tower. “It feels like we shouldn’t be here.”

Dash just laughed and said, “That’s what happens when you have friends in high places.”

“Literally!” Looking out at the airfield, Kelly could see all kinds of military airplanes landing and taking off. She wished that she knew more about the military, actually. It was going to be hard to pretend to be married to an Air Force Sergeant when she knew very little about how things worked. Then again, she’d never been to visit her “husband,” and so it was plausible that she might not know a lot.

They walked into a circular room that was flanked with windows and computer monitors, with about half a dozen men and women in uniform. The vibe was calm—even serene.

“Hammy, it is great to see you again, man.” Dash patted one of the men on the back. Then, turning to Kelly, he said, “Kelly, this is Joey Hammerstein. I embedded with his unit a couple of years ago. Ham, this is my… wife… Kelly. Kelly Gordon.”

Kelly extended her hand, “Nice to meet you.”

Ham stood up to shake her hand. “Dash, buddy, how’d you get a pretty lady like this to marry your ugly mug.”

“It’s a long story, Hammie. I’ll tell you someday when we’re having beers and tacos.”

“As long as the tacos have guacamole, right?”

“Oh god. Don’t remind me.” Dash turned to Kelly and said, “The whole time we were out, this one guy… who was it… Cal?” Ham nodded. “Right, so Cal was obsessing about tacos with guacamole. For, weeks all we heard about were the damn tacos. Finally, we get leave and go to this taco place. We were all so happy that Cal was going to get his damn tacos. When they finally arrived, they didn’t have guacamole. Cal put up such a fuss about guacamole, and the poor woman was like, “No tengo guacamole.” He ended up leaving without even eating the tacos.”

Kelly just grinned and shook her head. “Well, I get that way about pizza. Don’t even think about giving me deep dish pizza. I won’t eat it.”

Dash got a text message. “Excellent. We’re on the flight.” Then, patting Ham on the shoulder, he said, “We’ve got to head out. Hit me up next time you’re at Maxwell and we’ll grab a beer.”

“Sounds good, Gordon.” Turning to Kelly he said, “Nice to meet you, ma’am. Keep this guy in line, okay?”

As they walked over to the elevator, she said, “Why do people keep telling me this, Dash?”
