Chapter Seventeen: Come, Holy Spirit

Friday evening, 4th August

SOON AFTER LAURA’S return from the cabin, Sophie Young arrived to take Lucy and Alex home, and commented on how tired Brutus looked.

Laura laughed as the two teens talked over each other in their eagerness to tell their mother about their busy afternoon and explain the bulldog’s loss of energy.

Laughing, Mrs. Young told them they’d better get in her SUV now or they’d never leave. “I’ll hear all about it on the way home.”

The two were putting on their seatbelts when Mrs. Riceman’s Camry drew up. She was here to pick up Robert and Pippa, who also wanted to bombard their chauffeur with details about their adventures.

Sophie Young was getting into her vehicle. “I advise you to get them into the car pronto, otherwise you’ll be here all night, listening to what happened today.” She thanked the Harpers and drove off.

Mrs. Riceman laughed. “I appreciate the heads up! Come on, you two, I can listen and drive at the same time.” She turned to Laura. “Sounds as if they’ve had a wonderful day. I can’t thank you enough.”

“Our pleasure,” Laura said and waved as the Toyota took off down the drive.

Susan Pollard had gone home to collect clothing and toiletries for her and George, and fetch the cat.

Laura invited the priest and his seminarian to dinner, but they needed to get back to their duties.

“As soon as our feline charge shows up, we’ll get out of your hair,” said Father Michael. He then looked at his deacon apologetically. “I’m sorry, I forgot to ask you if you’re allergic to cats?”

Reverend Paul laughed. “No, it’s only horses I have a problem with.”

“You did famously today, Paul. I’d venture to say we’ve got you over your equus phobia.”

“Not quite, Father. But I’m glad I managed to make you think so.”

“Ah,” said the priest, “then we’re going to have to try immersion therapy, I think.”

“I don’t think that’s strictly necessary for my future parochial duties,” the seminarian said.

“You might be assigned to this parish,” Father Michael responded. “As you can see, being around horses is indispensable to the job.”

“I’m willing to wait and see if it becomes necessary.”

Jack returned with George in the pick-up. As George exited the vehicle, she told him where Susan had gone and asked if he and his wife would like to have dinner with them at the house this evening?

“That’s very kind of you,” said George. “But I’d rather not leave the fox cub by himself. We’ll bring some food from home and keep him company at the cabin.”

“Unless you’d rather eat alone, why don’t I bring the food down to the cabin?” Laura suggested.

“That sounds lovely, but I need to check with Susan.”

Shortly afterwards, his wife returned. She handed a carrier containing a pretty black and white cat to Father Michael, who expressed concern about her escaping while at his house.

“Mitsu doesn’t venture far, Father. She’s pretty old and can’t be bothered to run off. She knows where the food is.
