Chapter Eighteen

The problem of the uniform fitting had sort of fixed itself.

I’d been half-kidding when I’d asked Rob to come with me the night before, but in the cold light of day it seemed like a horrible idea. I didn’t want him witnessing me being squashed into too-tight clothing like a squeeze pop. The thought was too mortifying.

As soon as my lesson was done, I’d called him and tried to cancel, but he wasn’t having any of it.

“I haven’t picked up my uniform yet, either,” he said easily, “and I have to go shopping for a few other things, too. We can make it fun, Astrid, don’t worry.”

“Are you sure?” I’d asked doubtfully. “I thought guys hated shopping.”

“Well, whether I like it or not, I still have to wear clothes from somewhere,” he joked. “It won’t kill us to spend an hour or two at the mall.”

So, after I’d turned all the horses out and cleaned stalls and paddocks, I showered and threw on jeans and a tee shirt and braced myself for what horrors were about to come.

I was waiting anxiously by the front door when I heard the sound of tires crunching on gravel and I went outside expecting Rob’s truck, but instead there was a little black Volkswagen Golf sputtering away in the driveway.

“I hope you don’t mind if my sister drives us today,” Rob said, getting out of the car and coming halfway to the door to meet me. “She’s visiting for the week before her school starts and she offered to come along.”

“Sure,” I said, blushing furiously. Great, now there would be two people witnessing my shame. All I wanted was to turn around and go back inside, but I forced myself to keep walking to the car.

“Natalie, this is Astrid,” Rob said as I slid into the back seat. “Astrid, my favourite sister, Natalie.”

“Well, to be fair, I’m his only sister,” Natalie said, turning around her seat so she could get a look at me. “It’s very nice to meet you, Astrid. I’ve heard good things about you.”

“Really?” I said, shrinking a little under her steady gaze. She had wide brown eyes that watched me curiously but not unkindly. A tiny diamond embedded on the side of her nose glittered in the sunlight. Her short, dark hair was streaked with thick, blood-red highlights, and she looked very much like a worldly city-person. All of a sudden it seemed incredibly important that she approve of me.

“Of course,” she said, her mouth curving into a genuine smile. “Rob talks about you all the time.”

“Okay, that’s enough of that,” Rob said, laughing. “You don’t have to tell all my secrets.”

“Never, you know too many of mine. Dad would kill me if he ever found out half the stuff I got up to when I lived at home.”

As they talked, I began to feel a little more optimistic. I’d known a bit about Natalie but I’d forgotten an important part; Rob’s sister was in fashion school in Montreal and had won all sorts of student awards for her designs.
