Chapter Twelve

Beau

Fellow Falls looks exactly as down home and country as it sounds.

Breezing through here had been the plan, originally, so I barely took notice when I rode through with the rodeo. Now, I take my time winding through the streets of the little town. Mostly because I need some time away from the sweet little nurse who has me thinking impossible thoughts.

Down on main street, I see shops and businesses that remind me of the small-town life I left behind. Families with little ones walk the streets as their laughter fills the air, I spot two older gentlemen rocking on the front porch of an old hobby shop, and smile as I see who I would bet are their wives gossiping outside of the post office.

Pulling up at the same diner I first spotted Rubi at, I park and head inside. The very redhead waitress from last time greets me with a smile as I sit at the counter. Glancing around, I see almost the same scene entirely as that first day—only my hummingbird and her nurse entourage are missing.

“What can I get for you, handsome.” She pops her gum and pulls a pencil from behind her ear as she leans on the counter in front of me.

As my eyes flick up from the cleavage she flashes me, I almost laugh at myself. Never in my life have I turned my eyes from a pair of tits. Even thinking of flirting with this waitress—who I blatantly flirted with the last time I was here—makes my insides twist. I do believe my sweet Rubi Reed has done some down-home girl magic on me.

“Possibly some answers to a few questions. And a cup of coffee, two sugars, no cream.” I wince because with my smile that might seem like flirting.

“Ask me anything you like, cowboy.” Her lips curl up as she twirls her pink gum around her tongue, and I cringe a little.

“I reckon you know Rubi being as she was born and raised here. People in places like Fellow Falls know each other, good and bad. They come to places like this.” I look around and note that pretty much everyone is listening though they pretend otherwise. “And to people like you to talk about their misery and maybe get a slice of your pie while they’re at it. I want to know about her husband...her ex-husband...so I can be damn sure he never gets a chance to hurt her again.” I clear my throat and take a sip of my coffee as she watches me in stunned silence.

“Who’s asking?” a voice laced with age and knowledge says from behind me.

Twisting on the stool, I look back to look at the man who spoke. He was here the day Rubi and I first met, sitting in that same booth, nursing I could almost swear the same cup of coffee. Sharp eyes that have seen more life than even the likes of me narrow on me as I face him.

“Name is Beau Dumont.
