The tiny house in Broken Town was warm and friendly with a cozy fire heating the fireplace and lighting the main room.

Kellach pulled the curtains closed over the windows, shutting out the afternoon light.

“We have to be careful. The watch is probably looking for us by now.”

On the mantel, Lochinvar spread his tinfoil wings to catch the updraft of heat from the fire. Driskoll scrubbed at his new belt and scabbard, trying to get some of the dirt from the tunnel off the new leather.

“If they even remember who we are,” Driskoll scoffed. “They were all so drugged on that wyrmsoda.”

“Wyrmserum,” Kellach corrected.

“Yeah, wyrmserum,” Driskoll shook his head. “All those guards were poisoned. Even Guffy!”

“I know. If only we could figure out how they’re administering the poison, we might be able to stop it.”

Moyra came out of the back room. “My dad’s in bed. He’s still sleeping.”

Kellach sat down in a rickety chair beside his brother, placing his feet on the hearthstone near the fire. He drew the small journal out of his pocket and gazed at it for a moment.

“Is that the book you found behind the bed?” Driskoll asked.

“Yeah. But it’s all in some strange language.” Kellach opened it once more, flipping slowly through the pages of the journal. Each leaf of paper was covered with unusual scrawling. There were symbols that made no sense even to the young wizard’s trained eye. “I’m not even sure these are letters. They look like pictures, but weird ones. Maybe each picture is a word? Or part of a word?” Kellach began muttering to himself, slowly turning the pages as he studied the book.

“Is there any way to translate it?” Moyra asked, glancing down at the incomprehensible symbols.

“Well, usually I’d take it to Zendric.” Kellach sighed.

“Well, that’s not really an option right now,” she snapped.

Kellach frowned.

“I’m sorry, Kellach,” Moyra continued. “But there’s a very good chance that Zendric’s involved in this. The woman at his house, and the fact that he was at the prison before all this started happening. We can’t risk it.”

Kellach glared at the journal, not wanting to meet Moyra’s eyes. “Fine. Just let me concentrate.” He ran his thumb across the edges of the journal’s yellowy pages, flicking through them idly while his mind focused on the problem.

“These symbols,” Kellach pointed at the book. Locky flew over to Kellach’s shoulder with a fussy sniff. “I’ve seen them before—or something like them.”

“Kell-ack.” Lochinvar climbed down the wizard’s arm, stuffing his shiny, silver muzzle into the book. “Make words?”

“Locky, ow!” Kellach tried to pull the little dragon from his arm, wincing as the creature’s claws pinched against his bare skin. The dragonet continued to poke at the journal, scrabbling fiercely. Eventually, Kellach got the little creature to sit on the arm of the chair. Lochinvar continued to stare eagerly at the pages of the journal.

“Ugh,” Kellach suddenly reached up and pinched the bridge of his nose. “I just got a terrible headache.”

“I’ll get you a glass of water. I’m afraid we don’t have much else.
