By Cruise-Line Excursion

In addition to fully guided excursions to Berlin, many cruise lines offer a transportation-only “On Your Own” option: An unguided bus ride from the pier in Warnemünde to Berlin and back at an appointed time, generally leaving you five or six hours in the capital. Some cruise lines even charter a train to make this trip. Although this is pricey (around $150-200 or more, compared to around $115-135 for a round-trip train ticket), it’s worth thinking about for the peace of mind it buys. Remember, if you’re on a cruise-line trip and there’s a traffic jam coming back, the ship will wait for you—but not so if you’re returning on your own and your train is late. If one of the public train departures works perfectly for your trip, I’d opt for the train. But if the train times don’t sync with your schedule, the “On Your Own” excursion could be well worth the extra $50-75 to buy a couple of extra hours in Berlin.

Your shuttle will likely drop you off at the delightful square called Gendarmenmarkt, just south of Unter den Linden in the very center of the Berlin (for a description of this square, see here). If you wind up here, you can walk two blocks up Charlottenstrasse and turn left on Unter den Linden to reach Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag. Then, backtrack down Unter den Linden and continue all the way to Museum Island, following my self-guided walk.
