Snæfellsnes in Two Days

My preferred choice, this allows you time to linger and fit in more stops—and it lets you flex with the always-unpredictable weather. I’ve roughed out some possibilities below, which you can adapt according to your interests.

Day 1

In the morning, head from Reykjavík up to Borgarnes (1 hour); if you’re intrigued by the sagas, you can tour this town’s Settlement Center (see the Borgarnes & Reykholt Valley chapter). Carry on north, with a quick stop at the Gerðuberg Basalt Cliffs. Then take the Vatnaleið road to the north coast to visit Stykkishólmur; tour that town’s Norwegian House and Volcano Museum, consider a boat trip, and have lunch if you haven’t already. In the early afternoon, head to the Bjarnarhöfn Shark Museum for a taste of fermented shark. Then go west through Snaefellsnes’ fjord country to Grundarfjörður, where you can snap endless photos of the landmark Kirkjufell mountain. Sleep in the Grundarfjörður area or in Stykkishólmur (or head back down to Snæfellsnes’ south coast).
