RHETT
Jude and Xander talked to their wives after naps and before we got to the arena in Seattle. They filled me in on what happened at Jonahâs game. I didnât have long but I wanted to check in with him, so I called him.
âHey, Rhett. Donât you have a game soon?â he asked.
âI do. I heard about what happened today and I wanted to touch base with you,â I said.
âWhy? Because last I checked you werenât my dad and I wasnât your responsibility,â he said. I could hear the hurt in his voice and his misplaced anger at me.
âBut I am your friend. At least, I hoped I was. Not because of your mom either. Because of you,â I said gently.
âSorry.â He sighed and it sounded like he threw himself on his bed. âItâs been a rough day. I told dad I didnât want to see him again unless Jennifer was out of the picture. I mean, he basically threw me away. Who does that?â
âMore people than you could believe. It doesnât make it right and it doesnât mean it doesnât hurt. It fucking sucks and you deserve more, Jonah. Iâm proud of you for sticking up for yourself and whatâs right. Itâs what being a grown-up does. Making tough decisions even when they hurt like hell. You make them because they are the right thing to do.â
âYeah. It does fucking suck. Iâm in a shitty mood and I havenât left my room since we got home. I know mom is worried, but I havenât felt like talking about it. I needed some time alone to think about it,â he said.
âUnderstandable. Hey, I heard you got a shutout today. Way to go! Youâre going to wipe the ground with Atlanta next week.â
âCan we take your car on Wednesday? Momâs is nice and all but itâs not fast.â I laughed.
âI already told her I was driving.â
âThanks, Rhett. I guess I needed to talk to someone after all. I better talk to mom now. Weâre going to watch your game so I can teach her more about hockey. Sheâs getting better,â he said, and I chuckled imagining Jonah explaining things to Stella. He was patient and knew the sport well enough to answer any of her questions.
âSounds good, kiddo. I better get going. All the guys are half-dressed in their gear and Iâm still in my suit.â He laughed this time.
âYeah, you better light a fire under it. Coach will have your balls if you donât,â he said. I loved that he felt comfortable enough to curse around me. I probably should try to stop him, but I knew what I was like at his age and I knew he couldnât talk that way to his mom. I wanted him not to be afraid to come to me with anything.
âCoach will not only get them, heâll twist them âtil I wished I was dead.â He laughed. âIâll talk to you Tuesday night when I get home, kiddo. Call me if you need to talk.
