RHETT

Jude and Xander talked to their wives after naps and before we got to the arena in Seattle. They filled me in on what happened at Jonah’s game. I didn’t have long but I wanted to check in with him, so I called him.

“Hey, Rhett. Don’t you have a game soon?” he asked.

“I do. I heard about what happened today and I wanted to touch base with you,” I said.

“Why? Because last I checked you weren’t my dad and I wasn’t your responsibility,” he said. I could hear the hurt in his voice and his misplaced anger at me.

“But I am your friend. At least, I hoped I was. Not because of your mom either. Because of you,” I said gently.

“Sorry.” He sighed and it sounded like he threw himself on his bed. “It’s been a rough day. I told dad I didn’t want to see him again unless Jennifer was out of the picture. I mean, he basically threw me away. Who does that?”

“More people than you could believe. It doesn’t make it right and it doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt. It fucking sucks and you deserve more, Jonah. I’m proud of you for sticking up for yourself and what’s right. It’s what being a grown-up does. Making tough decisions even when they hurt like hell. You make them because they are the right thing to do.”

“Yeah. It does fucking suck. I’m in a shitty mood and I haven’t left my room since we got home. I know mom is worried, but I haven’t felt like talking about it. I needed some time alone to think about it,” he said.

“Understandable. Hey, I heard you got a shutout today. Way to go! You’re going to wipe the ground with Atlanta next week.”

“Can we take your car on Wednesday? Mom’s is nice and all but it’s not fast.” I laughed.

“I already told her I was driving.”

“Thanks, Rhett. I guess I needed to talk to someone after all. I better talk to mom now. We’re going to watch your game so I can teach her more about hockey. She’s getting better,” he said, and I chuckled imagining Jonah explaining things to Stella. He was patient and knew the sport well enough to answer any of her questions.

“Sounds good, kiddo. I better get going. All the guys are half-dressed in their gear and I’m still in my suit.” He laughed this time.

“Yeah, you better light a fire under it. Coach will have your balls if you don’t,” he said. I loved that he felt comfortable enough to curse around me. I probably should try to stop him, but I knew what I was like at his age and I knew he couldn’t talk that way to his mom. I wanted him not to be afraid to come to me with anything.

“Coach will not only get them, he’ll twist them ‘til I wished I was dead.” He laughed. “I’ll talk to you Tuesday night when I get home, kiddo. Call me if you need to talk.
