Basement
The day opened up with a burst of sunlight over the horizon and the summer heat set in early. Brock was alone, already having sent Beau off with Carmen. People bustled about, fortifying the walls around the building and inventorying supplies. Two positions were ripe on the minds and in conversation. The first was about Brock and the events from the morning. Though people hadnât stated it outright, Brock had installed doubt in their minds, and they whispered what-if scenarios amongst themselves.
Another group rose up, vocal and boisterous, in support of The Doctor, staying put, and fortifying the place. How Brock couldnât persuade them, he didnât know and he didnât care; instead he kept his head down and his ears open.
He came around the back of the building, hugging the wall to stay in the shade with an armful of damp clothes. Once he reached the trucks, he strung a piece of twine from mirror to mirror and hung the clothes with clothespins. He grumbled to himself about being forced to wear a pair of light blue shorts and a white t-shirt that said I love Texas. Desperately wanting his own pants and black tactical shirt, he willed them to dry faster.
Quick footfalls in the dirt took his attention away, and he spotted Austin sprinting towards him, his face drenched in sweat and his eyes wide.
âI sawâI saw something!â
âEasy, kid. Come here. Catch your breath.â Brock steered him around to the trucks near the wall.
Austin rested with his hands on his knees, heaving, then stood up straight and winced as the sun stung his eyes.
âI saw something in the basement.â
âWhat do you mean?â Brock whispered. âWhat were you doing down there?â
Austin looked confused. âDelivering flowers, like you said. I found wildflowers growing outside the wall near the gate. A few people went on a run nearby and I tagged along, snagging the flowers on my way back. Then, when they were going through the supplies, I went down to the basement.â
âAnd?â
âAnd Mouse is fine. Sheâs fine. I swear I saw her walking around. Thereâs a space under the door. I set the flowers down and called to her. She answered.â
âDid she open the door?â
âNo. She said she wasnât presentable. But I asked her about the map.â
Austin reached in his pocket and pulled out a thick piece of folded paper. He handed it over to Brock.
Brock unfolded it and looked it over.
âDid she say anything else?â
âNo. Not really. She did seem a bit off, though. Like it was hard for her to answer my questions. Her voice sounded weird too.â
âWhat do you mean?â Brock asked, tucking the map in his back pocket.
âI donât know. She sounded tired. Slow.â
âInteresting.â Brock put his hand on the teenagerâs shoulders. âSay nothing to anyone. Iâll tell Carmen when its safe. Well done.â
The boy nodded firmly. âWhatâs the next move?â
âLetâs head for the basement.â
Austin straightened his belt and situated his pants on his hips.
âWhereâs my dog?â Brock asked.
âWith the kids. Why?â
âGet her. Sheâs coming with us. Let Abigail know where we are.
