4Maslow’s Theory (1943), developed by an American psychologist, is based on the idea that everyone’s physical and psychological needs are ordered hierarchically from the most to the least compelling. The graphical representation chosen by the author, indeed, is aimed at emphasising the hierarchical aspect using the pyramid. At the base of this, the author positions the so-called (1) physiological needs, which include food, water, sleep, and shelter. Immediately above, we find (2) security needs, including the need to feel safe, secure, and stable. At the third level, we find (3) social needs, consisting of the need to feel loved and to belong to a group, while at the fourth level, Maslow inserts (4) esteem needs, i.e. self-esteem, recognition, and social status. Then, at the fifth and last level, (5) the need for self-fulfilment and self-development. The idea of the pyramid was developed by the author with the aim of demonstrating that some needs take priority over others: in particular, the physiological needs placed at the first level have greater importance than the following ones, and until these are satisfied, one cannot proceed to satisfy the others. Therefore, needs must be satisfied one at a time.
