Paula had laid the small syringe on a table by the side of the doorway. Gianfranco paced nervously around the church.

“Where is she damn it?” He looked at his watch yet again. “Twenty minutes late.”

“Relax,” she said. “She’ll be here soon.”

There was a slight pause before Paula spoke again. “She’s closer than you think.”

Desiro turned to face her. At that moment it came to him. She had said boot of the car. When she’d been discussing the kidnap she’d said boot not trunk. An American wouldn’t say boot an American would say trunk.

His mouth dropped and the words he wanted to say just wouldn’t form.

“I changed my appearance,” she said calmly. “It’s amazing what a little plastic surgery can do.”

She reached into her handbag. “Everything has worked out just fine Gianfranco, just perfectly.”

“You - MacArthur?” he said.

The girl nodded. “That’s right Celine MacArthur.” She raised the weapon and pulled the trigger.

It was just after 11.30 when Todd Powell ran into the church all flustered. She was sitting patiently on a pew.

“Paula I’m so sorry, my car wouldn’t start and then the phone ... I couldn’t contact you I’m sorry.”

She stood. “Don’t worry Todd, better late than never.”

“And that dirty great van out there. Who’s parked that there? I could hardly get through the door.”

She looked towards the open doorway and she walked towards him. “That’s your vehicle Todd... your hearse.”

She opened her handbag and reached inside.
