Double Cross

Down in south Louisiana, the day is almost gone. As the evening approaches, the setting sun is casting shadows over the muddy Mississippi River. Rays of sunlight squeeze through the thick willows growing along its peaceful shore. Observing this scene, you would think all is well across the universe. This is surely not the case.

While traveling north up the Mississippi River loaded with precious cargo, Cheese is feeling unsure of what may lie ahead. Just the thought of meeting with an unknown out of Barksdale Airforce Base for transport, is screaming for an ambush.

Cheese decides to use additional caution, so… he makes a quick call for a little extra backup. On his call, he informs Bones and TC, who are traveling north by car of his concerns. First, he gives them an update on the drone attack, along with Debbie Boone betraying everyone’s trust and stealing the scroll from Nathan. Second, he shares information from General Jack Masters, how he’s sending air transport for pickup at the Angola State Prison. Cheese also insures his men of his unwavering trust in the General.

However, what concerns Cheese, is that the very place their transport is being dispatched from, has a high probability of hostile players. With this hunch, he believes the attack drone was controlled from Barksdale and if this is the case, he’s about to drive right into a trap.

Less than a mile from the State Prison ferry crossing, Cheese pulls back on the dual throttles. The huge sea-going speedboat comes off plane and squats, causing a sizable wake to crash against the shoreline. He scans the area with binoculars and finds there are no signs of life, other than two elderly men sitting in a small skiff fishing.

Just south of the prison ferry crossing, lies a huge island, called Shreve’s Bar. This island sits almost directly in the center of the river with the main channel to the west. More than half of this mile-long landmass is covered with thick woods, and the northern shore is sandy beach. This area to the locals and the many tug-boat captains that travel the river, call it Shreve’s Cutoff.

Cheese, idles up close to the two fishermen, hits the kill switch and begins a friendly conversation, “Y’all catching anything?”

The man sitting in the front replies, “Yes sir, we’ve done quite well this evening.”

The Hound notices their accent doesn’t fit this part of the country, “You fellows from around here?”

They both chuckle as the same gentlemen answers. “No… I am sorry to say we are not. My colleague and I are from a place far away from this location.”

Cheese is a bit troubled with his odd reply and before continuing their conversation, he turns and notices Nathan is peeping over the edge while displaying a strange expression. “Hey Nate. You okay bud? You look like you saw a ghost.”

Without answering, Nathan squats down as if to be hiding. “Nate, what’s the matter with you, kiddo?”

Whispering, “Look at their eyes, Mr. Cheese. Look at their eyes.
