After a late lunch, Logan followed Thurza out into the back garden. The autumn sun was for once warm enough to enjoy. Carrying their mugs of tea and a plastic container of mini chocolate muffins outside, they headed to the floral swing seat at the end of the garden.

With full tummies, the twins had fallen asleep in their high chairs, and were now both stretched out in their matching light blue cots for an afternoon nap.

Joining Thurza on the seat, Logan kept a respectable gap between them. Without the twins to distract them, this was the perfect opportunity for getting to know each other better and discussing the twins. No disruptions, no babies, no patients to tend—just the two of them.

Logan settled back, glancing briefly at the woman beside him. Thurza intrigued him. The woman was beautiful, so it was no great mystery how they’d ended up making love. But she possessed more than just sex appeal. She was straight-talking, honest and seemingly not impressed by him at all—she fascinated him.

He’d never struggled to attract female attention, but this woman acted as though she viewed him as just another man in the world—and, strangely, he found he hated it. Although he had no plans to form anything with her other than a relationship shaped around and solely for their children. A family circle, but not living together as involved partners who were in love with each other, but as friends.

Unfortunately, his stupid inner male kept envisaging the idea of something more. Something he was adamant would never happen. He refused to ruin things between them because he couldn’t control his sex drive.

Dragging the heel of his shoe along the grass and through a thick trail of spilt sand from the red plastic sandpit shaped like a clam, he half turned towards her. His eyes ran over her hair and face, stopping at the curve of her neck. ‘I want to apologise again.’

She raised an eyebrow and enquired, ‘What for?’

He twisted fully on the seat until he faced her. ‘For not being around during your pregnancy and the birth. I failed you by not contacting you to double-check there were no repercussions from that night. It was a mistake. And it’s no excuse, but I am sorry.’

‘I never gave you my phone number,’ she pointed out, taking a sip of her tea. ‘All I had was your address.’

Logan took a gulp of his own drink. The tea was just the way he preferred it. Strong and sugarless. Resting the green mug on his leg, he asked, ‘Why did you leave that morning before I woke up?’

It had bothered him at the time, making him wonder if he’d done something wrong during that night. Something that had left her uncomfortable and caused her to leave without a word. Or perhaps he’d said something thoughtless and upset her?

‘Why did you sneak out? Did I do something to offend you, or...?’

‘Is that what you think?’ she asked with surprise.

He shrugged, still not sure, just conscious of how it had left him feeling.
