Chapter Ten

“What did you just say?” Yolanda had heard exactly what her husband had uttered, but she couldn’t believe that he would think she would do something like that—to him. To them.

Yes, they’d had a disagreement about children. And yes she’d come back to Bunya Junction to re-evaluate her marriage and what she wanted. But if he thought she was ill and had come home to die, and wouldn’t tell him, then there really was no hope their relationship could move forward. For him to think that she’d take his daughter away from him when, if it was true, Jayne would need her father more than ever, was too much to comprehend.

She would never do something like this to him.

“I—I.” He pushed back from the table and started pacing around the kitchen. “I’m sorry, Lana. Jayne said you were sick and all I could think about was you lying in that hospital bed. The images are burned into my brain of how weak and frail you were, you still are.”

How weak and frail she was?

What the hell? Anger shoved aside the nausea that had been rolling in her belly. She stood abruptly, her chair slamming to the ground with a loud bang. Jayne looked up from where she was playing with her doll in the corner.

“Mummy?” she asked, her voice wavering a little.

“I’m okay. Why don’t you go to your room? I’ll be there in a minute.” How she maintained a calm voice surprised the heck out of her, especially when all she wanted to do was scream at the man in front of her.

“Daddy?” Jayne had gone up to Michael and he squatted down next to her. The love father and daughter shared was so palpable she could almost reach out and touch it.

Why on earth would he ever think she’d do the thing he’d accused her of? Okay, not accused but asked her.

“It’s okay, sweetie, Mummy and I need to talk.” He pressed a kiss to her cheek. “I can’t wait to see your room.”

Their daughter was more attuned to their emotions than Yolanda had ever suspected, because the little girl looked between the two of them before patting Michael on the arm and walking away.

The little exchange had cooled her anger and Yolanda strived to grasp it back. It would be easier to deal with him if she had a little bit of that fire.

Her heart, on the other hand, was aching to go over to her husband and bury her face in his chest. To have his strong arms enclose her and hold her tight.

As if reading her thoughts, Michael came over to her, but he didn’t touch her, although she could see the matching yearning in his eyes.

“I really am sorry, Lana. I don’t know why I said what I did. You love Jayne too much to do that to her if it was true. I know you wouldn’t do that to me, either.”

His words were enough to reignite the embers. “You’re damn right I wouldn’t.
