CHAPTER 64: SCOUTS

As soon as they passed through the barrier over the sanctuary field, the air shifted. It was colder somehow, prickling their skin, and pressure built. Kain felt a rush of excitement at the possibilities of what might lie beyond. His Lightning Dao crackled against his skin, like an alarm.

"You feel that?" Lyra murmured beside him. She pressed close to his shoulder, dodging between plants with easy swiftness.

"Yeah. The pressure." He matched her low voice, and his gaze flitted over the massive trees. "The System has enhanced everything out here. And most of it wants to eat us."

The sanctuary field and this place could not have been more different. Inside, that sense of security and home had come almost naturally. Out here, it felt like they were trespassing in a monster's den. The very earth seemed to pulsate with malignant energy.

The System is making everything more dangerous. More violent. Like nature's been given a second chance to fight back against its mammalian oppressors.

"Look at those leaves." Lyra breathed, gesturing over at an oak tree with silver leaves. "They're silver. What the hell. I've never seen anything like that."

"They're probably conductive. Poisonous." Kain gave the tree a suitably wide berth. "Please don't find out."

The beaten path through the tree line was cluttered with undergrowth, but as Lyra hacked away at it, the two were finding several gaps, likely left from something much more violent than themselves. The path that they had located led through increasingly unfamiliar terrain. Tropical flowers bloomed with bright colors alongside the more familiar dark oaks. Vines with dagger-sized thorns reached out. Everything felt... twisted, just enough to threaten.

"Look at us, back to exploring a dangerous foreign forest. Really does feel like a fever dream." Lyra's voice held that familiar sense of nostalgia.

"Sort of." Kain found himself smiling a little. "We've both grown so much since those days."

"You're actually becoming sociable." She teased. "You used to only have to deal with me. We have a whole team now. We've got to make it through this for them as well as us."

She is right. Lyra, back in the Riftwood, had definitely been more than capable, but she lacked confidence. This Lyra moves with a real sense of confidence, like she isn't afraid of anything anymore. She is thinking ahead and is more of a leader than just a follower.

The two walked in comfortable silence for several minutes. Kain catalogued everything in their path. He noted plants, their movements and frequency, as well as distant sounds from various locations, that suggested territorial markers, and even more subtle pressure changes that indicated more or less oxygen.

"You remember when the Riftwood used to terrify me?" Lyra stepped over a large fallen log, littered with strange, phosphorescent fungal growths. "This fucked up place makes that one look like a walk in the park."

"The Riftwood had rules." Kain stopped, crouching down to examine deep claw marks on a tree. Too big to belong to any predator he was familiar with. "This place just feels.
