Chapter 15

December 12: A secret revealed

Evadne glanced across the room at Red’s desk. The office felt oddly empty without her.

She hoped Leona was right, and Red recovered quickly from her injury. If only she’d been quick enough to ask for Leona’s telephone number before she’d ended the call that day. If she had, she’d be able to find out how Red was doing rather than worrying herself into an ulcer. Of course, she could always visit the address, but her ingrained good manners balked at the idea of turning up uninvited. Asking the operator for Leona’s number seemed almost as much of an intrusion.

She picked up her pen and stared at her notes, but her mind refused to be distracted by work. Her thoughts kept going back to Red.

Did Leona have the same difficulty getting Red to rest? Sometimes it seemed that tying Red down would be a lot easier the trying to reason with her. Of course, any proposal regarding bed rest usually brought suggestive comments from Red that sent a blush surging over Evadne’s face. She felt one working its way up her neck, and she searched for a neutral topic to take her mind off such lascivious thoughts. Quadratic equations? Latin translations?

Was it Leona’s skill between the sheets that kept Red in bed?

Evadne’s blush completed its journey in a sudden flaming rush. What on earth was she thinking? She rubbed at her face and tried to remove the evidence of her wayward thoughts. What Red got up to in her own time was none of her business. She really needed to stop thinking about what Red and Leona might be doing before the speculation drove her insane as well as—well, heating up regions south.

“Stop it. Stop it. Stop it,” she muttered. She shook her head to dislodge the erotic pictures that kept sneaking into her mind. When had she become so depraved? “It’s all Red’s fault. She and her scurrilous suggestions.”

A rap on the door captured her attention in time to see the door open. Two men entered the office. Pausing, they looked at her in surprise.

“Can I help you, gentlemen?” she asked. The honorific was a bit of a stretch. While one of the men might fit that category, the other was a scruffy, slouching mess who made Red seem presentable.

“We’re looking for Red Wolverton,” the unkempt man said.

“And you are?” she asked.

The more neatly dressed man pulled his jacket to one side and revealed the badge pinned to his vest. “Detective Sergeant Allen,” he said. “My colleague is Detective Mulligan.”

“Detectives.” Evadne acknowledged the introduction.

“And you are?” Allen asked.

“Mrs. Evadne Davenport.” She noticed the tiniest flicker of surprise in the detective sergeant’s eyes. If she hadn’t been expecting such a reaction, she would have missed it. Mulligan’s amazed whistle was far less subtle.

“May I ask what you’re doing here, Mrs. Davenport?” Allen asked.

“I work here.”

“You work—” He broke off.

She could almost see the cogs in his mind whirring as he processed the information. Mulligan just looked confused.
