Chapter 11
The following night was the free skate of Trophee de France and it was also Rachna’s final night in Mumbai. She had yet to tell her parents about Jenny and she didn’t know if it was too soon to do so. In fact, she barely spoke to them since she had arrived. They wanted to know how things were and they were rooting for her. They were already proud of her for winning the silver in the Cup of China. However, they didn’t want her to try too many risky jumps.
“We cannot afford to see you get hurt again.” Her mother said. “It was horrible when you fell.”
“Don’t remind me,” Rachna murmured. “I thought I’d never touch the ice again after that fall. I’m glad I didn’t stop skating though. I still have a lot left in me.”
“It is good you finished school during your break.” Her father added. “It gave you some life experience.”
“Oh, Baba, I already have life experience,” Rachna told him. “I’ve been living away from you for a long time. I got a job that was decent and I made money. However, I couldn’t ignore the ice. It’s home for me. It’s the one place where I feel like myself. I’m going to prove to you and the rest of the world. I’m bringing home a medal from the Grand Prix final!”
She expected them to argue with her, but they approved of this. They showed her the banners that they had made and were ready to tape everything. Rachna felt the love from everyone, but there was still one person she wanted to see. Jenny had made a promise to be at Moscow. If there was one thing she knew, it was that Jenny didn’t break promises.
While everyone else went to bed, Rachna was watching the free skate finals in Paris. Jenny was the fourth one to perform. Her costume was a dark green and black with gold accents. It had changed from the Charity Cup as well. The gold made everything else pop out. She wasn’t paying to anyone else but the ice. Rachna took a deep breath as Jenny made her way to it and skated around. The announcer mentioned her name as she took her spot. The music that she was skating to was an original piece called “Love Knows No Bounds”. Right from the beginning, Jenny had everyone’s attention. She went into her choreography and her face showed a lot of emotion just from the first ten seconds of the song. She geared up for her big elements. The first jump was going to be a combination of a triple toe loop, triple loop jump. She landed both jumps and the audience clapped politely. Rachna couldn’t tell if it was because they were captivated or if they were a normally quiet bunch.
Maybe they can’t help themselves. Jenny can get the loudest people to stay quiet with her skating. Rachna thought as Jenny landed another jump, a double axel. Her next big elements were some spins.
