Eyes.

Hollow, unforgiving, cold eyes.

Manic, delirious, emotionally barren eyes.

Devoid and loveless,

Scrutinising, analysing, an evil X-ray,

Windows into the soul,

Yet no soul resides there.

Crystal-like blue, large and round,

I see the monster that resides there

Staring down with a knowing smile

Familiar and haunted.

Reflections, perceptions, misconceptions.

Are they my eyes? Or are they his?

I jump awake searching for a threat that isn’t there, sweat glowing off my skin. The nightmare still etched behind my eyes. Carefully, I creep out of bed and tiptoe my way to the bathroom. I run the cold tap and splash icy water over my face, and it doesn’t feel enough, I want to bathe in the cool of it.

Looking up, I see my reflection in the mirror. I watch as a lone droplet of water trickles down my nose and onto my lips. My eyes pick out the various scars I’ve collected, one to my temple, the slit across my eyebrow, and one at the bottom of my chin, which I still have no memory of getting.

My sight fixes on my eyes, crystal-like, blue, big, and round and framed in dark circles beneath pale skin. My vision flashes, and I see his familiar eyes, similar to mine, not as soft and much more crazed, and I flinch. Then the savage eyes of Tomasz invades, and my blood runs cold. I look away from the mirror sharply as if his ghost lives there, as if it will melt the horror away, but it doesn’t, and the panic takes hold.

Within seconds, I am sat inside my large walk-in shower, the cold water freezing against my skin, numbing my mind and calming the crawl on my skin, my forehead bouncing on my knees with every shiver and shake. Every time I decide it is time to get out, I find another reason why another sixty seconds can’t hurt. Am I losing my mind? Or is it just being invaded by the eyes of monsters? The list of them just gets longer, and I wonder – is my name at the top?
