The Concept of Spirituality

The data revealed that most academics within the business faculty were aware of the concept of spirituality; all of them associated it with religion in some ways, but some felt challenged talking about it. These academics also associated spirituality with terms like ethics, moral, values, interconnectedness, meaningfulness and other intangible concepts and may have used these interchangeably. The reason for this could be that while these terms are similar in nature and interconnected, they have a religious base (Bouckaert & Zsolnai, 2012).

According to Bell-Ellis, Jones, Longstreth, and Neal (2015) and Lindholm and Astin (2008), studies reveal that academics in higher education discuss the concept of spirituality in terms of having meaning, purpose, work, faith and other subjective concepts. Whilst these varied understandings by academics make it challenging to define the concept of spirituality, they also allow individuals some openness to further explore the concept. However, care would need to be taken when addressing the concept with a diverse group of individuals.
