Therapeutic Theme

A ‘therapy’ may be derived from a physical and cultural environment within which particular types of people, conventionally labelled sick or deviant by the dominant culture, can be cared for, encouraged to be autonomous, and helped to grow, in the sense of becoming able to live a ‘more meaningful life’. Therapeutic communes range from communes-as-encounter-groups to spaces in which ‘journeys through madness’ are embarked upon, such as at the Kingsway Community in London. The influence of the existential psychoanalysts R.D. Laing and David Cooper, upon this type of commune, particularly in Britain, has been noted by Juliet Mitchell:

By the 1960’s the post-war baby, once nurtured by its home-bound mother had become a teenager … As the cult of mother and child went its relentless way the child, become adolescent, escaped either in day-dreams of rebels without a cause, or increasingly with a cause – a cause against their parents. The late fifties or early sixties marked the rise of youth politics – The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, the New Left, the Committee of One Hundred, were dominated by young people. Schizophrenia was prevalent in adolescents – was it, too, a symptom of the revolt against the claustrophobic family? Laing caught and helped create the moment with this question.
