The second safety measure involves the waterproofing of the light fittings themselves. This is quantified using a rating system called the Ingress Protection (IP) rating. The IP rating consists of two numbers, with the first number ranging from 0 to 6, and the second ranging from 0 to 8. It is a common mistake to read both numbers, so that an IP rating of 45 is ‘forty-five’. In fact, the two numbers are not related, with the first number relating to the protection from ingress of solid objects, whereas the second number refers to the protection from ingress of liquid objects. In the bathroom only the second number is relevant.
