Two Friday’s later, Stella popped into the bathroom at work after her 8:00 a.m. lecture.

“Oh, hey. This is a pleasant surprise.”

Aurora slowly turned around from the sink, her eyes red and puffy.

“What’s wrong?” Stella moved closer.

“I just got off the phone with Becky. She accused me of purposefully trying to sabotage her wedding.”

“That seems harsh. I know planning a wedding is stressful, but that doesn’t give her the right to say that to you.” Stella ran a finger down one of the tear tracks on Aurora’s cheek. “Is it the date thing?”

Aurora nodded. “I don’t know why she’s so intent on me finding a date right now. The wedding is months away, and I don’t want to bring just anyone. She’s my best friend. This is the most important day in her life, and…”

“And what?”

Aurora wadded up a tissue and dabbed under her eye. “The one person I want to bring can’t go with me.”

Stella’s jaw stiffened. “I see.”

“It sucks.” Aurora attended to her other eye.

“Who is this person?”

Aurora pulled the tissue from her face. “You don’t know?”

Stella shook her head, crossing her arms.

“You. I want to bring you.”

A wave of relief whooshed through Stella. “Why can’t you bring me?”

“Because we aren’t dating. Not officially.”

“What do you call what we’re doing?”

“I know we agreed to see where things go, but according to our employers, we don’t know each other outside of work.”

Stella uncrossed her arms. “True. But what’s the likelihood anyone from work would even know if I was your date to Becky’s wedding? It’s not like we live in a small town.”

“I don’t know. I don’t think anyone from the school is invited. Becky’s an accountant, and Nathan is getting a PhD in some geeky field. Economics, maybe.”

“You see, and even if we do bump into someone we know, we can say you’re pathetic and couldn’t find a date so I agreed to help out.”

Aurora snorted. “Thanks for that.”

“I’m teasing of course. You’re such an amazing person. Anyone would kill to be your date.”

“What about you?”

“I thought I said I would go.”

“No. Would you kill someone?” Aurora’s eyes shone with humor.

“Uh, I’m a doctor, and I’m bound by the whole do no harm thing.” Stella shrugged there was nothing she could do to change that.

Aurora laughed. “Is that the only reason you haven’t killed someone?”

“I’m sure there are more reasons, but I’m kinda distracted right now and can’t think of any.”

“What’s distracting you?” Aurora’s eyes shone in the way that spoke directly to Stella.

“You. Remembering you in my bed the other night.”

“You’re such a sweet talker and in the ladies’ restroom of all places.”

Stella’s eyes panned the area. “No one is in here.”

Aurora shoved Stella’s shoulder. “No way. I’m not having sex in a bathroom.”

“I wasn’t talking about sex. But what about a kiss? These”—Stella pointed to her lips—“miss yours.”

“Is that right?” Aurora inched closer to Stella.

“It’s hard to survive each hour without getting a taste of you.”

“Well, Doc, I’m not sure if this is the smart thing to do.
