The interior of the truck was getting colder. Andrew knew they hadn’t turned on the refrigeration, but that the cold of the night in the mountains was permeating the thin walls. He fought back the shiver that ran through him. It was his job to take care of the people that he was trapped with, and if that meant giving up all his clothes, he would do it.

Silence filled the truck, save soft snores from the kidnapped victims. Brooke had been the only one who maintained conversation with him. The others were so frightened.

Actually, the two teenagers shut down after the gunshot that had killed his friend. The little ones had already retreated within themselves before Andrew arrived. He wondered if they thought he was connected with the kidnappers. All he could do to maintain some kind of trust with them was to keep talking to them and trying to help them see that he was one of the good guys.

Now his main concern was rescuing everyone and keeping little Connie from becoming sicker. Reaching through the opening, he felt her cheek to see if her face was any cooler than it had been before. Thank God, it’s not as hot as before. Thank God Brooke was able to come up with a solution.

He looked around at the woman resting uncomfortably in the far corner of the crate that was temporarily her home. She looked at peace. For now. He had to wonder, if she wasn’t here, he would probably have broken down even more when those assholes killed his friend.

Moving back, he leaned his head against the wall of the truck, letting his mind wander.

Andrew had come a long way from where he was when his life fell apart after his parents had died. The news had come while he was in class one day, on his way to becoming a doctor. It had been something he had wanted to do since he was a young boy, but that fateful day when his cell phone rang during a biology class changed everything for him.

It was his grandfather on the phone, the man who had raised Andrew’s father. The two had had a spat a few years beforehand when Andrew’s father didn’t want to come back and run the horse farm when his father wanted him to. Andrew’s father wanted to travel now that both of his sons were in college, giving his wife a luxury they hadn’t been able to afford for the duration of their marriage.

Hearing his grandfather’s voice on the phone as he headed out of the classroom had had Andrew nearly in tears, for he knew the news was bad. The news that both of his parents had been killed had a pain shooting through his heart so bad that he sank down against the wall and tried to catch his breath.

At that moment, Andrew Collins’s life began to change. Knowing his grandfather needed help on the ranch, Andrew had let the dream of becoming a doctor slip away.
