“It isn’t the reward that’s motivating me to find this son of a bitch.” Ted Miller used his napkin to wipe his mouth and sat back.

Alan had seen Nancy Jessop come into Lusty Appetites a few minutes before and leave shortly after with a small cardboard box. He’d known she and Holly would be having lunch together. Alan couldn’t prevent the slight blush when Nancy had winked at him—after all, he and Duncan had been rather intimately engaged with Holly in the woman’s house over the last couple of days.

He pulled his attention away from thoughts of his woman and focused on Ted.

“We know that,” Duncan said.

“My company thinks the bastard has been laying low. There’ve been no like crimes reported, so they think he hasn’t committed any since then.”

“But you believe he might still be harming animals.” Alan figured that in another life, Ted Miller had been a rancher himself. Though he freely admitted that the idea of that kind of hard physical labor wasn’t for him, he had a keen respect for the animals that God put on this earth, as well as the men who tended them.

“Hell, yes. He could be using his veterinary training in a dozen different ways to wreak havoc, and no one would know.”

“And you’re convinced that Mrs. Potsy knows not just who the man is, but where he’s been all this time?” Duncan asked.

“I am. And the fact that she’s gone to ground seems—to me, anyway—to back up that theory.” Ted sighed. “Why else would she disappear? She served her full term in prison. She emerged a free woman. There’s simply no other reason for her to hide.”

“It could be, like you said, that the woman was more afraid of Doctor Death than she was of serving time in prison,” Duncan said. “Maybe she’s hiding from him.”

Alan nodded his agreement. “Duncan and I are on the same page, there. There are only two reasons I can think of for a woman like her to protect scum like him. She’s either afraid of him, or she’s in love with him.”

“Well now, there is a third—and yes, I am fully aware that I tend not to see the best in some folks. She might be stupid enough to try and blackmail the bastard,” Ted said.

Ginny Kendall came over to their table and cleared away their lunch plates. “Would you gentlemen be looking to have some dessert?”

“Ma’am, I don’t know if I have room. That was the best roast beef I’ve had in a long, long time.” Ted rested his hand on a stomach that seemed a bit more paunchy since the last time they’d shared a meal.

“I’m going to have some pecan pie,” Duncan said. “And a cup of coffee, please.”

“Are there any of those chocolate éclairs that Tracy makes?” Alan asked.

Ginny grinned. “There are indeed. She just finished making a full batch just before y’all came in.”

“That’s what I’ll have, then, and coffee, too, please.”

Ted groaned. “Total temptation. I’ll have whichever one of those two delicious-sounding desserts you decide I should have.
