Chapter 14

“Transient global amnesia,” Jonas repeated slowly. “I never heard of that.”

“It’s rather rare,” his pa’s doctor said. Dr. Erin Nosis almost smiled. “It’s better to have this as the cause than epilepsy or stroke.”

Jonas shuddered. Hearing the word epilepsy caused him to become all tense, and he tried to roll his neck some to release some of his stress.

"TGA is a rare medical condition," she repeated. "A person will experience a period of sudden memory loss without any cause. It generally resolves in a few hours. They tend to repeat questions a hundred times because they simply cannot recall the answer. They will generally recognize people they know, but they won't know where they are or how they got there."

“That explained why my pa was willing to listen to Fran,” Jonas said.

“When did I see Fran?” his pa joked from the bed.

Jonas rubbed a hand down his face. “Do you see what I have to put up with?”

The doctor grinned. “Humor is good.”

“Not my pa’s. He is the king of telling dad jokes.”

“I’ve… I may have heard a few of them a time or two,” she said.

“Can you blame a guy for trying to liven this place up a little?” his pa asked.

“This is a hospital,” Dr. Nosis said firmly before her lips betrayed her, unable to remain in a straight line but curling into a teasing smile. “Not a morgue!”

“I’m just glad you get paid the big bucks since you figured out what ails me, and you didn’t have to give me pills or needles or anything like that.”

“You had to have so many scans,” Jonas reminded him.

“Ah, I was out of it yet for most of it.” His pa swatted his hand. He was still in his bed, but he was wearing a golf shirt, top button undone, and jeans. His pa only ever wore jeans. It used to drive Jonas’s ma crazy because she hated that he even wore them to church too.

“We had to rule out something more serious,” the doctor said.

“It still seemed serious,” Jonas protested. “What if it happens again? While he’s…”

His throat closed, and he couldn’t finish, but his pa’s face flashed with sympathy, his lips a straight line.

While his pa was driving.

Like Evelyn.

But Jonas couldn’t bring himself to say that.

“I know TGA can seem frightening, but it’s not altogether that serious,” the doctor said. “Most likely, this incident will never happen again.”

“He couldn’t form any new memories when he had that…” Jonas waved his hand. “Episode?”

“Yes,” Dr. Nosis said, nodding. “He also couldn’t recall the recent past either.”

“Still can’t,” his pa grumbled. At Jonas’s stricken expression, his pa added, “I mean around the… episode. I can now. I know what I ate for breakfast. I know what I watched on the TV last night. I know—”

“What if it does happen again?” Jonas asked. “I know you said it most likely won’t, but what if it does? Pa is a truck driver. His home base is close to our houses, but there are times when he’s far from home.
