CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

CHASE

THREE SUNS and Antelope Runner rode beside Buffalo Ghost as they moved south in the Big Hole basin away from the village of the Salish. The captured boy had been handed off to No Horses who had the boy riding behind him, gagged and with his hands tied and the end of the binding tied to No Horses’ belt. The boy, White Feather, had proven to be a handful even after the swats given by Buffalo Ghost and was continually trying his bonds and doing whatever he could devise to make things difficult.

Three Suns spoke, “Why do we go south away from the valley of the Big Hole?”

Buffalo Ghost breathed deep, lifting his shoulders, and turned toward Three Suns, “We lost two hands and one of our warriors!” He thrust up one hand, all fingers extended, “These were trying to gain honors to become warriors and they were lost! Their fathers now fight themselves to keep from grieving for their lost sons. We came with pride, eager to prove the Siksika were great warriors, but our scouts failed us! The hunting parties had returned, the village had many warriors that fought our young men, boys that were not ready to battle against experienced warriors!” He shook his head, “The Salish are strong, they will want to avenge this attack and reclaim the captives and horses. They will come with many warriors, more than we have left,” motioning to the warriors that followed. “They would expect us to go back the way we came, but,” he pointed to the heavy clouds that were crowding together, “snow comes! We will be gone before they can gather their warriors for a revenge raid and the snow will cover our trail!”

“But we ride away from our village!” pleaded Antelope Runner. He was a young warrior, but he had only been on one raid before this and the country they traveled was new to him.

Ghost lifted his arm, pointing to their left at the long mountain range where the clouds lay low upon the peaks, “Our village is beyond those mountains! We go across a pass at the end,” pointing with his chin to the south of the basin, “of this valley, then turn back to our village. It is but a half days travel further than the narrow valley of the Big Hole River.”

Three Suns spoke, “Our captives and many of our young warriors are not prepared for the snow.”

“They were told to prepare!” snarled Buffalo Ghost. Then shook his head, “We will have a warm camp, we will have fire and blankets and when we ride, the captives will ride with the warrior who took them, they will warm each other,” answered Buffalo Ghost.
