There followed a list of the school governors.
âOh,â said Ron. âBut you said Buckbeak isnât a bad hippogriff, Hagrid. I bet heâll get offââ
âYeh donâ know them gargoyles at the Committee fer the Disposal oâ Dangerous Creatures!â choked Hagrid, wiping his eyes on his sleeve. âTheyâve got it in fer interestinâ creatures!â
A sudden sound from the corner of Hagridâs cabin made Harry, Ron, and Hermione whip around. Buckbeak the hippogriff was lying in the corner, chomping on something that was oozing blood all over the floor.
âI couldnâ leave him tied up out there in the snow!â choked Hagrid. âAll on his own! At Christmas.â
Harry, Ron, and Hermione looked at one another. They had never seen eye to eye with Hagrid about what he called âinteresting creaturesâ and other people called âterrifying monsters.â On the other hand, there didnât seem to be any particular harm in Buckbeak. In fact, by Hagridâs usual standards, he was positively cute.
âYouâll have to put up a good strong defense, Hagrid,â said Hermione, sitting down and laying a hand on Hagridâs massive forearm. âIâm sure you can prove Buckbeak is safe.â
âWonât make no diffârence!â sobbed Hagrid. âThem Disposal devils, theyâre all in Lucius Malfoyâs pocket! Scared oâ him! Anâ if I lose the case, Buckbeakââ
Hagrid drew his finger swiftly across his throat, then gave a great wail and lurched forward, his face in his arms.
âWhat about Dumbledore, Hagrid?â said Harry.
âHeâs done moreân enough fer me already,â groaned Hagrid. âGot enough on his plate what with keepinâ them dementors outta the castle, anâ Sirius Black lurkinâ aroundââ
Ron and Hermione looked quickly at Harry, as though expecting him to start berating Hagrid for not telling him the truth about Black. But Harry couldnât bring himself to do it, not now that he saw Hagrid so miserable and scared.
âListen, Hagrid,â he said, âyou canât give up. Hermioneâs right, you just need a good defense. You can call us as witnessesââ
âIâm sure Iâve read about a case of hippogriff-baiting,â said Hermione thoughtfully, âwhere the hippogriff got off. Iâll look it up for you, Hagrid, and see exactly what happened.â
Hagrid howled still more loudly. Harry and Hermione looked at Ron to help them.
âErâshall I make a cup of tea?â said Ron.
Harry stared at him.
âItâs what my mum does whenever someoneâs upset,â Ron muttered, shrugging.
At last, after many more assurances of help, with a steaming mug of tea in front of him, Hagrid blew his nose on a handkerchief the size of a tablecloth and said, âYer right. I canâ afford to go ter pieces. Gotta pull meself togetherâ¦â
Fang the boarhound came timidly out from under the table and laid his head on Hagridâs knee.
âIâve not bin meself lately,â said Hagrid, stroking Fang with one hand and mopping his face with the other. âWorried abouâ Buckbeak, anâ no one likinâ me classesââ
âWe do like them!â lied Hermione at once.
âYeah, theyâre great!â said Ron, crossing his fingers under the table. âErâhow are the flobberworms?â
âDead,â said Hagrid gloomily. âToo much lettuce.â
âOh no!â said Ron, his lip twitching.
