Iâm no longer sure I have thoughts worth writing down.
It seems Iâve lost my voice along the way.
I hope it comes back.
And when Callum found Archer after group therapy that heâd missed because heâd been busy painting Archerâs apartment, the two virtually ran across the frosty yard and up the stairs for the big reveal. Upon Callumâs request, Archer hadnât been inside the apartment at all.
âClose your eyes,â Callum said.
Archer did as he was asked.
The door creaked open and Callum took Archerâs hand, leading him in slowly. âSurprise,â he said clearly after taking a breath and Archer opened his eyes.
The furniture was exactly where it had been before the walls were painted, but everything in the room felt larger. The dark blue of the ceiling extended to the walls, making it a clear sky on all sides. More stars were dotted in every direction Archer saw. Halfway down the walls, black hills rolled continuously from one wall to another.
Archerâs mouth dropped open. âYou did all this?â
âSure d-d-did,â Callum said. âD-d-do you like it?â
Archer couldnât take his eyes off the walls. They breathed with life and exuded peace and quietness of midnight, hills under an open sky. âI love it, Callum.â
âG-good,â Callum said. âIâm glad.â
âI donât know how to thank you,â Archer said.
Someone cleared their throat behind the boys and they both spun around. Marion was standing at the door. âThatâs wonderful work, Callum,â she said, her smile a little sad.
âT-t-thank you, M-Marion,â Callum said.
She was smiling at Callum for a moment longer, then directed her saddened gaze at Archer. Something in Archer stiffened. This wasnât going to be good news. Father? Could Marion have found out? Could someone have let her know? Archer hoped that wasnât it. He was not yet sure what to do and if his father had passed away in the time of Archerâs indecision, Archer would never be able to forgive himself. If only he could choose not to care. If only he could decide not to see him.
But he hoped he still had a chance. He didnât want the decision taken away from him.
âDetective Beard is here to see you, dear,â Marion said.
âMe?â Archer stared at Marion for a long moment before he remembered to breathe.
Marionâs worry surfaced to her face. âIâm afraid it might not be the best news.â
Archer nodded eagerly. He had to see the detective at once. Whatever it was, he couldnât just stand here. âWhere?â
âIn my office,â Marion said.
âG-g-good luck, Archer,â Callum said, touching Archerâs back briefly. All three walked out and Archer didnât remember shutting the door. He would later think it must have been Callum whoâd done it.
Downstairs and around the corner, Marion led Archer to her office. She patted his shoulder and said she would wait outside.
âThanks,â Archer said as he walked in.
Detective Beard sat on the sofa that was pushed against the left wall. Several lamps bathed the room in dim yellow colors and the radiator heated the air so much that Archer wished he was wearing short sleeves.
