FIFTEEN

Lane was nervous. Which was absurd. He’d been in war zones, fought in active firefights, and jumped out of places. Going out to dinner should not be this big of an issue.

Hilary assured him the restaurant she’d picked was very low-key and casual dress was fine, but she looked amazing in a pair of skintight black jeans and a pink top that flowed down her torso. She also gained several inches in height because of the heels she was wearing.

On her way out the door, she grabbed her keys. When he protested, she just kissed him and kept walking. “You have no idea where you’re going, and you don’t drive in traffic. I’ll handle this.”

Lane wanted to protest, but she was right. Still, it made him uncomfortable not to be in control of the situation.

More thinking time before he talked to her was probably a good thing though. He’d finally turned on his phone this afternoon while Hilary went to see her therapist and had a flurry of texts and messages from his men from as little as a week ago. It gave him a warm feeling of coming home to know they were still searching for him even though he didn’t know what he was going to do about it yet. He’d talked with Tech, his communications while Hilary was out. “Tech,” he said.

“Cap?!” He heard the mingled surprise and excitement in the other man’s voice and couldn’t help but smile.

“Yeah.”

“Where the fuck have you been? You came home and disappeared, man!”

Lane sucked in a sharp breath. “I just needed some time.”

“Time for what?”

“I just didn’t know if I could do this.”

“Do what? Be with your family? Us?”

“No, that’s not it. Be a civilian. Live a normal life.”

“Cap, I don’t think any of us are ever going to have a shot at that, but that’s why we need to stick together.”

“Is that what you’re doing?”

There’d been a long pause then. “No, not yet. Quinn is too young for me to leave my parents. I still need their help.”

“What about the rest of the guys?”

“Sunny, Cash, and Nails all went back home, but I don’t think any of them want to be there. Eagle is… well, if what he told me is true, Eagle might go home soon for the first time in years too.”

Lane jerked. Eagle’s family from before, his time in the service, was almost as messed up as his. Almost.

“Everything alright?”

“I’m not sure. He called me to tell me his mom passed, and he was going back to Wyoming to sort everything out.”

“Wow, that’s awful.”

A baby crying in the background interrupted them. “I’ve got to go, Cap. Don’t be a stranger and turn your damn phone on more than once a year.”

Before he’d been able to answer, Tech had hung up on him. He didn’t quite know what to make of the conversation. It certainly seemed like they would welcome seeing and hearing from him, but he was still skeptical. How could they? He’d failed him, or at least he felt he had.
