EIGHT

Kate lay in bed, staring at the ceiling and fighting sleep. She’d been found. They had been found. Sleeping didn’t seem to be an option at the moment, but she knew Lucas was right. If anyone got too close to the cabin, the dogs would sound the alert.

But now she was back to being afraid of the nightmares she knew would come, and while they were usually intermittent, she’d had a few since waking to find someone in her bedroom trying to kill her—along with everything else.

Understandable, of course, but not something she was eager to revisit. Cocoa raised her head then walked over to give Kate’s nose a swipe with her tiny tongue. Kate pulled the animal to her chest and let out a sigh.

Lord, please help them find who’s doing this. Thank you for keeping me alive through the crash. Thank you for the hope that Chloe’s still alive and being taken care of. Please let me get her back so I can raise her to know her mother. A mother who loved her so much...

She finally drifted into sleep, and just like she’d feared, the nightmares came. The kind where she knew she was dreaming and ordered herself to wake up. But couldn’t.

This time she was at Nikki’s house with Chloe on her lap. Nikki was sitting beside her, showing her pictures on her phone, swiping too fast for Kate to make out what the pictures were. “Nikki, stop.”

But Nikki wasn’t there anymore, but Kate was on the road to meet her. Time had passed in the blink of an eye.

“Please, Kate, I need your help,” Nikki’s pleas had tugged at her, and she’d gone. The feelings from that time were real and just as terrifying because she knew what was coming and could do nothing to stop it.

Wake up! Wake up!

And still she drove, heading toward danger. The hair on the back of her neck rose. This time, something was different.

But...what?

She pulled to a stop in the wide-open area and got out, looking around the designated meeting spot Nikki had chosen and texted her directions to. “I have to be careful,” her friend had said, her voice shaky and scared. “I have to make sure he doesn’t follow me.”

“Who?”

“I’ll tell you everything when I see you. Just meet me there, okay? Please, Kate! I have to leave now before he comes back!”

“Okay, okay. I’ll be there.”

The dream shifted. She was back in the car with baby Chloe strapped safely in the back, her favorite stuffed pink rabbit clutched in her fingers. The baby babbled, and Kate’s fingers flexed around the wheel. “It’s going to be fine, sweetheart. Everything’s going to be fine.” Saying the words out loud was supposed to help. It didn’t. What had Nikki gotten her mixed up in? Who was she so afraid would “come back” that she had to run? Headlights bounced off the rearview mirror, and she squinted. Was that Nikki following her?

Or...someone else?

Or it was no one and Nikki’s paranoia had rubbed off on Kate.
