Chapter 7.
Will Audrey Turn Professional?
âWhat a dump.â Audrey had stood outside and tried her hardest to sound like Bette Davis, but choked on the cigarette smoke saying, âdump.â
Alan and Tabitha just looked at each other as Audrey stumbled over the door step and knocked over a plastic stand that once proudly displayed a selection of goods that catered for âEvery Gentlemanâs Whimsy & Want.â
âHello Tabitha love, howâs the world of lesbianism going these days?â
âSheâs not a lesbian mum.â
âArenât you love?â
âWell never say never eh, Audrey? Thatâs my motto anyway.â
âDidnât get on with it myself really.â
âAgain, that is too much information for a mother to pass to her child, mum.â
âDonât be daft, I didnât really do much anyway.â
âWhat?â Alan said in a slightly higher pitch than normal.
âLike Tabitha âere says, never say never. Anyway, it was only Mrs. Hardcastle and me tickling each other in our panty girdles for a couple of businessmen. No harm in it is there?
What is this place then? Itâs a bit big for you to live in on your own isnât it, or are you asking your old mum to move in here with you? I donât know if I could, all my clieâ¦. er friends wouldnât know where to find me.â
âNo, what youâre standing in mum is the reception of what will be Brightonâs premier brothel.â
âBrightonâs premier what?â
âA brothel. Itâll be my brothel, mum. Itâs going to be a high class knocking shop and Iâll want you working the reception.â
âHow the hell did you manage to buy this place?â
âI like the way you only ask about the money and not why Iâm opening a brothel.â
âThereâs nothing wrong with a brothel son, as long as you look after the girls. Itâs better for them and better for the punters. Youâll want security you know, a bouncer to keep out the riff raff and youâll want to keep the fuzz sweet too.â
âThis is why Iâve brought you here. Didnât I say sheâd be a fountain of knowledge Tabby?â
Before Tabitha had a chance to murmur that heâd never said any such thing, a very excited Alan marched Audrey up to the first floor and beyond, spelling out the plans he had for the place.
âSo what do you think then?â
âLike I said, I think youâve bitten off a bit more than you can chew. Thereâs the money for one thing. Have you got any idea how much this is going to cost?â
âDonât worry about that, itâs in place.â
âWhereâs it all coming from, thatâs what Iâd like to knowâ?
âIt was my pocket money from Percy if you must know.â
âPocket moneyâ spluttered Audrey.
âYes, pocket money. Anyway, itâs none of your concern. What do you think of the house and my ideas for the place?â
âLike I keep saying, I think youâve bitten off a bit more than you can chew, son. Thereâs a huge amount of work here just to get it open, even then, youâve got to be as hard as nails in this game. Itâs not all like The Happy Hooker with Lynn Redgrave larking about on top of boardroom tables you know.
