Will Audrey Turn Professional?

“What a dump.” Audrey had stood outside and tried her hardest to sound like Bette Davis, but choked on the cigarette smoke saying, “dump.”

Alan and Tabitha just looked at each other as Audrey stumbled over the door step and knocked over a plastic stand that once proudly displayed a selection of goods that catered for ‘Every Gentleman’s Whimsy & Want.’

“Hello Tabitha love, how’s the world of lesbianism going these days?”

“She’s not a lesbian mum.”

“Aren’t you love?”

“Well never say never eh, Audrey? That’s my motto anyway.”

“Didn’t get on with it myself really.”

“Again, that is too much information for a mother to pass to her child, mum.”

“Don’t be daft, I didn’t really do much anyway.”

“What?” Alan said in a slightly higher pitch than normal.

“Like Tabitha ‘ere says, never say never. Anyway, it was only Mrs. Hardcastle and me tickling each other in our panty girdles for a couple of businessmen. No harm in it is there?

What is this place then? It’s a bit big for you to live in on your own isn’t it, or are you asking your old mum to move in here with you? I don’t know if I could, all my clie…. er friends wouldn’t know where to find me.”

“No, what you’re standing in mum is the reception of what will be Brighton’s premier brothel.”

“Brighton’s premier what?”

“A brothel. It’ll be my brothel, mum. It’s going to be a high class knocking shop and I’ll want you working the reception.”

“How the hell did you manage to buy this place?”

“I like the way you only ask about the money and not why I’m opening a brothel.”

“There’s nothing wrong with a brothel son, as long as you look after the girls. It’s better for them and better for the punters. You’ll want security you know, a bouncer to keep out the riff raff and you’ll want to keep the fuzz sweet too.”

“This is why I’ve brought you here. Didn’t I say she’d be a fountain of knowledge Tabby?”

Before Tabitha had a chance to murmur that he’d never said any such thing, a very excited Alan marched Audrey up to the first floor and beyond, spelling out the plans he had for the place.

“So what do you think then?”

“Like I said, I think you’ve bitten off a bit more than you can chew. There’s the money for one thing. Have you got any idea how much this is going to cost?”

“Don’t worry about that, it’s in place.”

“Where’s it all coming from, that’s what I’d like to know”?

“It was my pocket money from Percy if you must know.”

“Pocket money” spluttered Audrey.

“Yes, pocket money. Anyway, it’s none of your concern. What do you think of the house and my ideas for the place?”

“Like I keep saying, I think you’ve bitten off a bit more than you can chew, son. There’s a huge amount of work here just to get it open, even then, you’ve got to be as hard as nails in this game. It’s not all like The Happy Hooker with Lynn Redgrave larking about on top of boardroom tables you know.
