HOT TIP
Keep your doors and drawers slightly ajar so the paint doesn’t dry them shut.
BEVEL BE GONE
Back in the 1970s, we were in love with the bevel. It was all the rage, the cool thing to have. But now, it’s as dated as they come. What were we all thinking? It gives great meaning to not following the fads!
A lot of old kitchens around the country have beveled doors. But it’s not a good reason to rip your old kitchen out. You’re going to love this little trick of the trade. If your old kitchen doors are still in great condition, simply cover up the bevel instead. Hire a good carpenter for a day to nail a medium density fibreboard (MDF) or pine timber moulding straight over the top of the bevel. This will give you a shaker-style door with no bevel to be seen anywhere. You then laminate-paint all your doors.
EMBARRASSING MOMENT
Talk about embarrassing. I was filming my USA TV show, 5 Day Flip, when the producer asked me to nail in a timber moulding to all the old doors in an otherwise plain kitchen.
You see, I’m not a carpenter but in this instance, they wanted me to look like one. ‘Do you think you can nail in those trims, Cherie?’ the producers asked … ‘Sure!’ I chanted.
The cameras were rolling, I looked like the Lara Croft version of renovators; life was good. All done and I’m feeling pretty proud of myself, thinking carpentry ain’t that hard after all.
About an hour later, when we moved on to another task in the kitchen, the head carpenter went to open one of the doors. It wouldn’t open. Then he tried the next one. Shock, horror, it wouldn’t open. I had nailed every door shut. Embarrassing!
Moral of this story, don’t pretend to be good at something when you’re not! Know when to DIY and when not to DIY!
On the flipside, the doors looked fabulous!
