CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT: MEMPHIS
Daniel and the Brothers of Chaos are sentenced the day that Kate and I pay for Locke to get ordained. We miss the sentencing altogether, but Rollins keeps us updated. The only thing that matters to me is the fact they wonât be getting out for fifteen years, minimum of ten served. That sounds just fine to me.
Black Construction started working on a place for us in Oregon. I told the boys that we were moving, and they were nothing but supportive. There are loose ends to tie, but weâll get there.
Kate and I donât have plans for a honeymoon, but that suits us better anyway. We talked about where weâd go, but staying in bed all day seems about as good of an idea as any. We both agreed that was about as close to perfect as it could get.
Kate looks up from a wedding magazine and smiles. âOne day,â she teases, âHow do you feel?â
How can I put that into words for her? I glance off, not hesitating but just⦠thinking. Iâve been doing that recently, putting actual thought into decisions. And Kateâs been letting go. Weâve been good for one another.
âI feel,â I finally settle on, âlike itâs the best decision Iâve ever made in my life.â
Kateâs smile grows, and turns back to her bridal magazine. She told me a few days ago that she still likes looking through them, even though everything is already planned. I only get to do this once, she told me. Iâm going to do it right.
She kicks me out of the house that night, saying that itâs bad luck to see the bride before the wedding, so I go and make myself comfortable with the boys. They offer to take me to a strip joint, or one of the remaining brothels left in town, but I wouldnât be caught dead in there after everything that went down. We throw back some beers instead and eventually settle down in the old meeting room in the back of the first Black Construction warehouse.
âFirst one of us to tie the knot, Memphis,â Locke says, lifting his beer in a toast to me. The other boys follow suit, and we all drink.
It feels strange to be here at the head of the table again, knowing that this may be the last time for this chapter. I clap Adams on the back. âHow does it feel?â I ask, smirking. âYouâre gonna be President in a few days.â
âFeels like you shouldâve left sooner,â he barks with a laugh, and we all join in with laughter of our own. But our laughter dies down quickly, and weâre left with comfortable silence surrounding us.
âThank you all,â I say, trying to keep my voice from wavering, âfor making it out here. And for everything youâve done. I appreciate it, and I know Kate appreciates it, too.â
âHere here,â someone says, and we drink in relative quiet after that. We donât need words. Itâs the calm after the storm, that
