Chapter 23 â 01738.022 AA
âYou have to admit, that was the most comfortable bed weâve ever slept on.â
âWeâre not taking it with us,â I responded stubbornly as we stepped out of the master bedroom.
âCome on,â Elspeth wheedled. âWeâre going to trash this place anyway! It wouldnât hurt to grab a few nice things to take with us, right?â
âLike what?â I demanded.
âThe bed, the toilet ââ
âThe toilet?â I scoffed.
âHave you used it yet? Itâs like shitting off the edge of a cloud!â She gave me a skeptical look. âPlease donât tell me you have some kind of weird légionnaire thing where you donât need to poop.â
She paused, thinking. âWait, have I ever seen you poop?â
âPlease, can we end this line of conversation before I become ill?â Aggy groaned as she shoved Elspeth back into the master bedroom.
Someone knocked on the suiteâs door.
Playing the role of bodyguards, Aggy and I checked out the room service stewards as they wheeled breakfast into our suite. They glanced around, likely looking for intel for their masters.
The main room of the suite was a mess, with clothing, accessories, and empty plates strewn about, all artfully arranged to make it appear like a hurricane, or a rich, young woman, had torn through. Only after the stewards were ushered back outside did Elspeth emerge from the master bedroom.
âNobody expects a lady of decent breeding to be up and about at this hour,â the AI explained as Elspeth grabbed a plate and loaded it up with eggs and sausage. âClearly you are not a lady of fine breeding, but we have to keep up appearances.â
âWhat can I say, Jamesâs habit of waking up ridiculously early has rubbed off on me,â the albino said between bites of food.
Aggy just sighed in exasperation.
âThe parade is scheduled to start early this afternoon, giving us a few hours to scout out the arena,â I said.
âMy buddies are already mapping out the tunnels you spotted, leading out from our holdfast,â Josefine volunteered. âIf weâre lucky, weâll find a way to start sneaking them into the Circus and start raising hells ahead of the main show.â
âIâll keep them off the Circusâs sensors,â Aggy agreed. âHaving a more readily accessible route to the holdfast would be extremely helpful.â
âThe auction is set to begin as soon as the parade ends, which will be the perfect time to sneak under the arena and try and find the Star Ravagers,â Elspeth said. âYou do that, weâll focus on winning their sponsorship.â
The Diaspora Circus had a macabre sponsorship system, where guests could pay to support their chosen contestants. It was their way of spicing up the gambling, to add an extra level of gamesmanship to an already disgustingly inhuman event.
While some guests were clearly sadists who were only there to watch people suffering, the Circusâs other huge draw was its gambling. The resortâs casinos offered more than just poker and simple games of chance. Guests could bet on the blood sports, picking contestants to win or lose a given round, survive the day, or win the entire event.
