Chapter twenty-one

01737.178 AA

Rat was less than thrilled when I suggested we start our day with a light jog.

“I thought you said I could spend the day tinkering,” she said, tugging a blanket over her head. “Besides, jogging is for grunts, not nerds.”

I managed to convince her to join me by promising to help her scout out new places for her workshop.

“Damn you, tempting me to this with promises of engineering!” she moaned as we ran.

I kept the pace light, barely a quarter of my usual speed, but Rat was huffing and begging for a break by the time we finished a few laps around the AI core.

“You’re a monster,” she said, holding a stitch in her side.

Grinning, I helped her to the showers. We lingered there a bit since I wanted to reward her for her hard work. I figured linking sex to exercise was a clever way to encourage her.

The albino engineer was grinning vacantly after we dressed and went to meet with Aggy in the AI core.

“Okay, maybe exercise isn’t so bad,” she admitted.

Aggy’s automatons had been busy. They had begun processing the salvage we had seized from the cultists, churning out the components we’d need to claim the neighboring compartments. She also had them prepare her hardware, clearing slots to install the new memory modules.

Rat hurried to help, crawling into an access duct that ran below the core.

She kept up a running commentary as she worked. “I’ve never really seen an interface like this, and I still have no clue how these crystalline panels actually work. I’d love to see that quantum etching thingamajig if I ever get the chance.”

I heard a series of clicks, and a surge of power thrummed through Aggy’s hardware.

Climbing back onto the deck, the albino engineer stood next to me, both of us waiting with bated breath as the AI sorted through the new data.

When the silence drew on, moving into minutes, I finally spoke up. “Aggy, what’s going on?”

“Apologies,” she said slowly, almost as if she were embarrassed. “The data inscribed on these sheets is – strange. They’re not memories, not exactly. It’s a historical record, before I was fully conscious, a record of my creation.”

“Spooky,” Rat whispered.

“Indeed. It’s like watching a play, but experiencing it as an unseen observer, hovering just off the stage.” Aggy sounded disoriented and confused.

I tried to help her focus. “What did you learn?”

She drew a deep breath or at least imitated doing so.

“My creation was envisioned after the fall of the UTG and the exodus from Earth,” she said. “The woman you knew as the Martyred Goddess and her companions, the Saints, wanted to create a system to safeguard their people. I was to be a guardian, an ally in the coming trials.”

A hologram popped up, and a video began playing.

I saw a woman wearing battle-scarred power armor. Flecks of gold clung to the edges of the breastplate and pauldrons, but despite the incredible wear and tear it had seen, the armor looked fully functional.
