Chapter 18
Carmen stormed into her room and slammed the bedroom door with such force her whole room shook. She slammed her palms on her vanity table and inspected each part of the cream-colored dresser. She admired how each small grain of wood came together and created something bigger than itself.
Carmen lifted her head and looked at her reflection, her hair dangling in front of her eyes, with two or three strands stuck to her face due to her salty tears. Weakness was spray-painted across her face, and her uncle’s voice echoed in her mind. “I’m considering leaving the game alone.” Life was unfair, and Carmen was the butt of its joke. The eyes that looked back at her were weak and in no way ready to fill Renee’s shoes. She balled up her fist and punched the mirror, watching the pieces of glass jump into the air then gracefully fall to their demise.
Never was Lyfe not being by her side a part of her master plan. Her whole vision of being in power revolved around everyone doing her dirty work while she did nothing but sit and look pretty. Carmen figured if she kept Renee’s crew, they would do everything that needed to be done, but when Renee made it known that her crew left with her, she settled for Lyfe picking up the pieces to a life she knew nothing about. Now he was considering laying his lifestyle down, which left Carmen sinking into quicksand before she even started her first day of work. All she wanted was the world, but it wasn’t giving itself up to her easily.
Carmen’s knuckles oozed blood, and she watched it drizzle down her hand. She flopped down on her bed and slapped her face into her hands, blood applying itself to her cheeks like makeup.
What am I going to do? had been the only words running through her mind for the past five minutes. She was so close, yet so far from a life she drooled over. She knew she didn’t have what it took to be a queenpin, but she would never admit it. The words would never leave her mouth. Coming to terms with the prospect of losing her dream, she finally gave in to temptation and broke down into a sea of tears. There was no way she could sustain what Renee was handing over to her. She needed help and would do just about anything to receive it. Lyfe could say what he wanted, but Carmen took his words and twisted them to the point where she believed he was abandoning her and putting Renee first. She was embarking on a new journey, and if he didn’t walk with her, he was walking against her.
Carmen wiped the tears from her face and sat like a zombie without an ounce of a soul, glaring at the striped wallpaper. Ten minutes later, her phone rang, but she ignored it, figuring it was Lyfe. But after it rang back-to-back, Carmen’s tolerance for her ringtone ran thin, and she answered it without looking at the caller ID.
