Earls Court is an area in central London every bit as cosmopolitan as Barcelona—if not more so. But there the similarity of Earls Court with that city ends. The inhabitants of Earls Court, whose nationalities and skin-colour have a very wide range, nevertheless have one thing in common — the mania which attacks all those who live in large cities. Certainly they do not stroll in the sunshine—perhaps because the sun has a habit of avoiding London. And even when the sun does shine on that city, strolling in the narrow traffic-jammed streets of Earls Court is not a pleasureable occupation. It is a long tramp to Trafalgar Square, which is about the only place in London that resembles Barcelona's Plaza Cataluna. Not that the denizens of Earls Court would go for a stroll even if the sun shone all day every day, and there were a thousand such places as the Plaza Cataluna awaiting their pleasure. They are far too busy!

This mania for being busy practically twenty-four hours a day is very infectious. Even the most inscrutable Orientals, including sari-clad ladies from the sub-continent of India, are not immune from it. The inscrutable Orientals soon replace their inscrutable expressions for one of worried impatience as they wait for buses, or fight for a seat on the underground trains. And it is never long before the sari-clad ladies change over to trousers so that they can get across the roads, mainly one-way traffic systems, quick enough to avoid instant and ignominious death!

It is, of course, the same in all large cities—and London is one of the world's largest. The natives of these large cities are of course, in the main, trapped in their own jungle of concrete, steel, and clouds of exhaust fumes. But what of the others? The hundreds of nationalities who flock to these concrete jungles and actually choose to live there? What do they seek?

The answer to this is quite simple—money. The only trouble is that most of them never seem to get around to facing the fact that although they might earn three times as much in a place like London than they would in their home towns, they also spend three times as much. On top of which they have the discomfort of living in a place like Earls Court!

Still, hope springs eternal in most human breasts, and Jose Vergara, a resident at 72 Longridge Road, Earls Court, London, was very hopeful. Having successfully transferred himself from Barcelona, where he had been a waiter, to London, where he was again a waiter, the portents looked favourable to José. For one thing he was being paid much more for his services as a waiter in London than he ever was in Barcelona! And the other thing which intrigued the ever-curious José, was the fact that there appeared to be more homosexuals per square mile in London than there was in the whole length and breadth of his native town. José was indeed very busy...

José was nineteen
