Under the shared ontogenetic environments hypothesis:

– If a method developed on a sample which includes individuals with a growth deficit provides overall more accurate estimates in a test sample which also includes individuals with a similar growth deficit, then the same method should provide similarly accurate age estimates across all the long bones in that test sample.

The testing of these hypotheses requires that a method developed on an African training sample be tested on African and European test samples, with a similar and a distinct growth status. Similarly, this requires that a method developed on a training sample which includes individuals with or without a growth deficit, can be tested on a sample with similar growth status, both European and African. Given the contextual information for the samples given in the previous section, if accurate age estimations are more dependent on presumed ancestry, then regression formulae by Cardoso et al. (2014) are expected to perform the best in the Forensic sample, and particularly in the Belleville sample, whereas the method by Stull et al. (2014) is expected to perform the best in the Hamann-Todd, but particularly the Dart sample. If the performance of an age estimation method relies predominantly on similar ontogenetic histories, then regression formulae by Cardoso et al. (2014) are expected to perform the best in the Hamann-Todd but particularly in the Dart sample, whereas the method by Stull et al. (2014) is expected to perform the best in the Belleville, and particularly well in the Forensic sample. Similarly, the models developed by Cardoso et al. (2014) should perform best most often in the Forensic and Hamann-Todd “white” subsamples, whereas those developed by Stull et al. (2014) should perform best in the “black” subsamples of both series.
