“These tunnels never end, do they?” Tannin muttered as she ducked inside.

It was not a short walk and she was soon impatient.

“Where are we goin’?” she whined.

She had ended up staying at Flint’s after a they’d had a late night of cheap whisky and ceilidh dancing until their feet hurt. She’d made amends with him after their previous argument which more or less consisted of buying him a drink and all was forgiven. He snored like a hog though and she’d hardly slept. Flint had sheepishly bought her a hot sweetroll for breakfast as thanks for not kicking him during the night, but it had only perked her up for as long as it took her to eat it. She was hopelessly grouchy, her feet were still sore and, if she had to be truly honest, she was a little hungover. She knew her complaints made her sound like a petulant child but this walk was far longer than anticipated.

“To get some answers,” Ava replied. “I told you.”

“That doesn’t tell me anythin’.”

“Then I suppose you’ll have to stop dragging your feet and hurry up.”

The passage they walked through had a trough of brown, muddy water running through the middle of it that stank of decay. They walked in single file. Attilo’s torch in front did little to lighten the mood.

“I really hate your tunnels,” Tannin grumbled. “Why can’t we just walk there like normal people on streets made for walkin’ on? In the sunlight. Do you remember sunlight?”
