Almost an Olympian

While most of my athletic abilities were displayed with my fingers on a typewriter, your grandmother enjoyed all kinds of contact sports. And during her high school years she belonged to her province's basketball league. The surprising fact was that she was the shortest in the team but the best scorer. She even had a special game nickname.

We shall do something quite different right now. You already know that I worked at the Social Security Hospital and also held private practice. So, we shall end our run at the government site.

We both will close our eyes tightly and take a deep breath. This they both did, and when they opened their eyes they found themselves outside the house standing beside the grandfather's wife, who was very ill at ease.

“I have to go to the hospital! My husband is in the cardio unit!”

“But wait for the cab,” she is being told by a neighbor.

“I'll get there faster,” is her answer while she starts running down the street.

Abuelito and his nieto kept her company while she ran all through the long Santa Elena Avenue and on to Vía Porras all the way down to Vía España. From there, she made a left turn, and she kept on going without pausing until she reached the crossing of El Carmen Church and increased her pace as she approached the hospital.

Her husband and grandchild kept her company and floated briskly beside her and through the throngs of people along the path. If they flew on top they ran the risk of losing track of her.

Since she knew the hospital quite well she kept running up three flights of stairs and straight into the coronary intensive care unit.

Once inside the room we can see myself lying on a bed and connected to an IV and an oxygen mask. And my wife is

sitting down to hear the physician's report. She is told that I had some kind of arrhythmia and had fainted in my office.

We hear me asking her how she got there so fast. And with some embarrassment she answers: “I ran.”

Did you know that your father was in the track team in his high school? He ran 1,500 meters. Now you know where he got the stamina. They both could have been track team Olympians.
