James

James knocked on Sarah's apartment door, feeling a strange mixture of apprehension and excitement. The thought of seeing her—on purpose—made his heart go haywire and his stomach flop like a freshly-caught fish. Fortunately, doubt, fear, and a sobering sense of futility kept him from grinning like a lovesick fool when she opened the door.

She stood there in a white T-shirt and jeans, with her dark hair pulled back into a loose ponytail. She was beautiful, in an effortless, I-rolled-out-of-bed-like-this kind of way. A cautious smile played on her lips, but her expression was otherwise unreadable.

“Hey,” she said softly. “You're here.”

“As promised.”

“Well, come in.”

Her apartment was just as he imagined—a little untidy, but bright and fresh, with little touches of personality here and there. The walls were painted a light grayish-blue, and the trim, cabinetry, and most of the furniture was white. A plush pale-blue throw rug sat on the living room floor, and old-fashioned crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling. Framed photos, offbeat artwork, and quirky sayings hung on the walls.

A rustic wooden coffee table sat in the center of the living area, stacked with books and magazines, most of which were related to veterinary medicine. However, a built-in shelf that ran along one wall was packed full of novels and cookbooks.

She watched his eyes as they traveled across the bookshelf. “You know I'm a sucker for a good novel,” she said.

“I do know that. What are you reading these days?”

“Some mysteries, but mostly spy novels.”

“Is that so?”

“Yeah. That romance stuff isn't for me. I find who-dun-its and spy-versus-spy intrigue way more interesting.”

“Huh. What's your favorite?”

“I really love Agent X by G.B. Harding. That whole series, actually.”

“I've read that series.”

Sarah crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes. “No, you haven’t.”

“Now you're telling me what I've read? Why would I make that up?”

Sarah sighed. “You’re right. It makes no sense. Why do I keep doing that?”

Before James could say anything else, the oven timer went off.

“Oh, hey, I have a peace offering,” Sarah said. She went into the kitchen and opened the oven door. A heavenly smell filled the air as she pulled out a tray of cookies. “I've been experimenting. These are salted caramel chocolate chip.” She began carefully transferring the cookies from the pan to a wire rack.

“Hmmm.” James hesitated.

She pointed a spatula at him. “You're trying them. Turning down a peace offering is an open act of hostility.”

“Well, when you put it that way.”

Sarah laughed. “We'll let them cool a minute, and then we'll see what you think.” She smiled brightly. “I have very high hopes.”

“If they don't turn out exactly as planned, you can always give them to your grandfather.”

“Totally. I'm surprised he hasn't followed the scent and shown up here already with his hand out.”

There was a brief, awkward silence until a large calico cat walked into the room.

“Hello there, girl! Did you come to check out our guest?” Sarah bent down to pick the cat up, then cradled it in her arms.

“Makes sense that you'd have a cat,” James said.
