Luc knew he should just pull out of his arms and walk away, but he just couldn’t do that to Andren. When it came to the hunter, he had no control over himself. It was a weakness he could ill afford but one that he couldn’t help. He sighed, and the anger drained out of him. “I’ll never leave you, Andren,” Lucian promised, meaning it and cursing himself for meaning it. “Ever. Don’t worry about that, my sweet hunter. I wish I could make this easier on you. It’s not easy going from being a regular human to being a vampire. I imagine it’s even worse of a transition from hunter to vampire.”

A look of realization dawned on Andren’s face. “That’s it, Luc.” Lucian looked at him curiously. “I can’t just separate myself from who I am as a hunter completely. I’m both, Luc. I’m vampire hunter and a vampire,” he said excitedly.

“What do you mean?” Lucian asked. Instead of answering, Andren kissed him quickly and gave a smile of pure joy. “What is it, love?” Lucian asked again, bringing his palm to touch against his hunter’s face.

“I could hunt the killer, Luc,” Andren said. “I’ve trained for it my entire life. With the extra powers I’ve gained as vampire, I’d be more effective than I ever was before. I know all the weaknesses now.”

Lucian’s eyes widened. “Absolutely not! I will not risk you. Not for anyone, not even the innocent, Andren. It would kill me to lose you. If it is an ancient, you will only be the slightest bit more prepared than when you were human. You’ve never even seen half what I’m capable of, and some ancients are much more fearsome. I’ve seen entire families die at their hands before, hunters trained as you’ve been trained.”

“Hunt them with me, then,” Andren urged, kissing Luc’s lips. “Together we can do it. You’ve acted as a hunter for our people before. Why not now?”

“Because I can’t risk losing you! Because the thought of you dying tears me apart. If I lost you, I would be as crazed as any of the vampires you hunted. I’d kill anyone and everyone to avenge you.” Andren’s expression went panicked as tears welled in Lucian’s eyes. His maker’s voice became choked with too much emotion. “I can’t…I can’t lose you.” The words were broken and harsh. Andren pulled Luc tighter into his arms. Luc would be unable to bear the sorrow if he lost Andren. He knew himself and was as honest with himself as he was able. If Andren died, whoever took his life and whoever got in his way were fair game.

“You’re not going to lose me, Luc. Never. I’m yours, and you’re mine.” He brought their lips together in a gentle kiss designed to calm his distraught sire. Lucian tangled his hands in Andren’s hair, turning the sweetness of the kiss to something hard and needy. Luc was completely taken aback by the passion of the kiss. Their tongues tangled, and Luc’s hands fumbled with the stays of Andren’s clothes.
