Kippy took us downstairs to George’s living quarters and led us into the den, a far warmer and more welcoming room than the sterile corridors above. The furniture was made of rich leather, and there was an unlit hearth on one wall, the rough stone build making the room feel old. Thick carpet covered the floor, and there were shelves of books everywhere, most of them bound in leather and embossed with gold leaf.

“You can wait for George here,” Kippy said as she leaned up against one of the bookshelves. “It’s good you’re here, actually. I need to talk to you about–”

I waved her off. “Later. We need to speak to Noreen and James here.”

Kippy pursed her lips and tsked, then threw her hands in the air. “Fine. I’ll go get drinks.” She held up a finger. “But only because George will chew me out if I don’t. Try not to get blood on anything.”

I checked the wound in my shoulder as she left the room. There was about a half-inch deep groove in the meat above my collarbone, but it had stopped bleeding, though the surrounding skin was caked in red, as was the upper half of my shirt. Rosa flopped down in the armchair and instantly regretted the fast movement as her hand went to her head. Noreen and James must have taken that as their cue that it was okay for them to sit, too, because they perched on the long couch together, glancing at each other and then at us, expressions totally lost. Xavier took the other armchair. The only reason I didn’t sit down was that I knew it was George’s stuff, and I didn’t want to get it dirty. If it had been Kippy’s furniture, I would have bled all over it.

“Noreen, James, are you okay to talk now?” I asked them as I leaned against the stone fireplace. “It’s okay if you’re not. We can wait for Ozoa to get back with drinks or for George to take a second to look you over.”

“I think I’m okay,” Noreen said slowly. James looked a little more hesitant, sinking into the couch cushions with his arms wrapped around his midsection.

“Lorraine said you’re interested in the mystery of the relic box,” I said. “And that you might have some information that could help us with the search. We’re trying to get to it before those thieves that attacked you do.”

“Anything to keep it out of their hands,” Noreen sneered, a hint of fire tracing across her face. She nudged James, and he sat up a little straighter as Noreen motioned toward me with her head.

“Right,” he said and cleared his throat. “We actually do have something we think might help you. A few years ago, my predecessor at the college passed this box along to me when he retired. He said it had been given to him by a family member, but he didn’t really know what it was and so hadn’t really done anything with it, but he thought it might fit with my research interests, so he gave it to me.
